broke Allan Border's record ?. If he did, then he would be the leading
test wicket taker of all time bowling to the leading test run scorer of
all time, which is a pretty rare occurrence. If he did not bowl to Lara
in the first inning, he might still bowl to him in the second inning.
What was the previous instance of the leading run scorer facing the
leading wicket taking bowler?.

It seems that the last instance of this happening was in 1887 when A
Shrewsbury faced FR Spofforth.
I did my analysis manually (a tedious process, I know) and might have
gone wrong. Some someone comment on this or post stats?

(?)
During the period of Border's reign, the possile record holders were
Hadlee,Kapil,Walsh,Murali,Warne. Border's last match was between 25-29
March 1994 against SA. That eliminates bowlers from Walsh onwards.
Border last played India between 1-5 Feb 1992, at which time Kapil did
not have the record. Hadlee played his last match between 5-10 Jul 1990.
Therefore Border cannot take part in such a record.
On to Sunil Gavaskar, who played his last test match between 13-17 March
1987 and held the batting record since Nov 13 1983. The possible
candidates for him are then Botham and Lillee. Botham last played India
between 8-13 Jul 1982 (when he did not have the record) and Lille last
played India between 7-11Feb 1981 (when he was not the record holder).
That eliminates Gavaskar.
On to Sir Geoffrey Boycott who held the batting record between (23 Dec
1981 - 13 Nov 1983). The possible candidates for him are then Lillee and
Lance Gibbs. Lillee played an English team containing Boycott between
27th August - 1 September 1981 (at which time he did not have the
record). That eliminates Lillee. The other possible candidate Lance
Gibbs played his last match on 31 Jan - 5 Feb 1976. That eliminates him.
On to Sir Garfield Sobers who held the batting record between (Mar 26,
1972 - 23 Dec 1981).He played his last test against England between
30Mar - 5Apr 1974. The only candidate possible for him is Trueman who
retired in 1965, when Sobers didn't have the record.
On to Cowdrey. The only possible candidate for him is Trueman and he
could not have faced him.
On to Hammond. (Record held Jun 26 1937- Nov 29 1970) and he retired in
1946/47. He did not face Statham, Trueman, Bedser, and Grimmet) when
they held their world records.
On to Jack Hobbs (Record held between Dec 22, 1922 - Jun 26 1937). He
played his last test in 1930. and in any case could not have played
Barnes who held the record between 1913 and 1936.
On to C Hill. (Aus) (Record held between Aug 12 1902 - Dec 22 1922).
Can't have played Trumble (Also from Aus). The other candidate Briggs
retired in 1899 so Hill could not have played him when both held their
records.
On to AC MacLaren (Eng). (Record held Jul 26, 1902 - Aug 12, 1902;) He
can't have played Briggs (frm England)
On to C Hill (Aus) (Again) (Record held Jul 24, 1902; - Jul 26, 1902)
Can't have played Briggs (Retired in 1899).
On to AC MacLaren (Eng) (Again) (Record held Jun 12, 1902-Jul 4,
1902). Can't have played Briggs (from England).
SE Gregory (Aus) 1294th on Feb 18, 1902; extended record to 1366
J Darling (Aus) 1283rd on Jan 23, 1902; extended record to 1293
Briggs retired in 1899
SE Gregory (Aus) 1278th on Jan 22, 1902; extended record to 1282
A Shrewsbury (Eng) (Aug 12, 1886 - Jan 22, 1902) (Retired 1893, can't
have faced CTB Turner when Turner had the bowling record). He did face
Spofforth when he had the world record.
