IRANI TROPHY: Bombay v Rest of India
***hede Stadium, Bombay, 2, 3, 4 October 1995
====> Day 3, 4 Oct 95
Bombay win the Irani Cup - G Viswanath
On the face of it, Bombay`s overwhelming win over Rest of India
in the 1995-96 Zal Irani Cup would be reckoned as an incredible
effort. A quarter of an hour before lunch on the third day of the
five day match, Bombay closed out the match to win by nine wick-
ets and retain the Irani Cup.
It ought to be the shortest of the Irani Cup matches since Bombay
won the Cup in the inaugural year in 1959-60. The Bombay team --
clad in Reebok shirts -- led by Sachin Tendulkar walked back to
the pavilion in jubilant mood after the beanpole made Nilesh Kul-
karni took a well judged catch on the edge of the long on fence
to end Venkatesh Prasad`s long handle blows and Rest of India`s
second innings at 186. Bombay completed the wrap up job 15
minutes before lunch and won the Cup for the 14th time from 19
finals.
Witness to the gutless show by the Rest of India was some of the
stalwarts of the past like Chandu Borde, Dilip Sardesai, Polly
Umrigar, Ramakant Desai and the national selectors G. R.
Visvanath, Anshuman Gaekwad, M.P. Pandove and Sambaran Banerjee.
And the Chairman of the selection committee, Gundappa Visvanath
was candid to admit, that he is ``terribly disappointed`` by the
abject surrender of the Rest team. ``This has been a good wicket.
And the players were picked on the basis of their performances in
the last season. The spinners could turn the ball, but who got
the wickets... the medium pacers. It`s a shame that the Irani Cup
got over so quickly,`` said Visvanath.
The consequences of such a deplorable show by the Rest of India
batsmen are bound to be severe. At least three of the selectors
were peeved that they were not informed of Navjot Singh`s foot
injury. His replacement as captain of the team was Nayan Mongia.
And after their flawed display, some of the Rest batsmen may find
the selectors` judgments unfavourable to them. Mr. Visvanath did
not make an overt statement, but he dropped hints saying, ``We
have seen this match and we have determined some of the batsman`s
class.``
It was a crippling start to the Rest innings on wednesday morning
when Nayan Mongia walked out with Rajesh Chauhan -- and not the
left hander Sridhar Sharath, who was down with viral fever and
weak to continue his innings. And in under 45 minutes the Rest
second innings diminished from 131 for 4 to 147 for seven, with
medium pacer Paras Mambhrey forcing Chauhan, Ubaid Kamaal and
Mongia to falter and make their exit from the middle.
Bowlers Venketesh Prasad and Venketapathy Raju survived the
spells of Mambhrey and Ankola, but left hand spinner Nilesh Kul-
karni broke the eighth wicket resistance, forcing Raju to edge to
Kambli at short gully. Then the lanky Prasad threw his bat around
to take Rest past 167 runs to necessitate Bombay bat again. And
Sanjay Manjrekar`s flurry of shots secured Bombay the impending
win before lunch.
Even as many would recognize Bombay`s bowling riches handled with
a great deal of thoughtfulness by Sachin Tendulkar what hurt an
impartial observer was the lack of zest among the Rest batsmen to
rise to the occasion in a big match of the season like the Irani
Cup. They have been utter failures and none will have pity for
those who do not try.
