You might be right in taking a fifth seamer ahead of a second spinner. But
the question is who should prevail? Raju or Kumble? It is a very close decision
to make (very close indeed).

Raju has done well in WSC and his figures have been

                   9 - 1 - 32 - 2 (Aus)
                  10 - 1 - 32 - 3 (Aus-2nd final)
                  10 - 0 - 33 - 1 (WI)
(and I don't have the score card of one match)

In the remaining 6 matches, he didn't play.

But think of Kumble. He has done well in all the onedayers he played. He is a
natural oneday bowler. It is very hard to get runs off him. His stuff is not
dangerous, but restrictive. However, batsmen get out trying to hit him in
desperation. He gets a couple of wkts like that in every match (of course, he
gets more sometimes. eg his 4 wkts at Sharjah). His analysis in one high scoring
match in Texaco trophy (his second ODI) was 10-2-19-2. What else would one
expect from a spinner? He is a not a great fielder, but even Raju is not much
better. In batting, there isn't much difference between the two. (BTW, Kumble
has some Ranji centuries. They don't mean much though.)

Kumble bowls with almost a medium pacer's run up. He bowls speedish leg-breaks
and he is more of a top-spinner than a leg-spinner. He is supposed to be good
at mixing his top-spin and the leg-breaks well. That makes him hard to be hit.
I get a feeling that the bounce of the Aussie wkts will aid his style and make
it much more difficult to hit him. He looks to me like an ideal spinner for
onedayers in Australia. If selected, he will perform well. Moreover, he is in
a good form right now (back in India).

It is hard to send Raju home after those good performances. But if you want to
select only one spinner, I feel it should be Kumble. (Though he did well at
Sharjah, I guess he was dropped for the Aussie tour only because the team was
being selected for both tests and ODI's.)

You are right, it is really hard to pick between Raju and Kumble.
I have seen both of them bowling. It appeared to me both are good
one day bowlers. May be the bounce of the Aus wicket will favour
Kumble but I don't think the Newzealand wicket will be of much help.
I think it will be a very close call. Raju having been exposed to the
Aus conditions may get the nod in his favour.

If the selectors by any chance decide to include Shastry in the
side ( they are monitoring his progress very close), then I will go
with Kumble because it gives variety to the attack. If Shastry gets
selected, then either Sidhu or Amre has to go out. Looking at the
nature of the selectors it looks like the axe may fall on Amre, which
is very sad. Who knows, what surprise the selectors are upto this
        time.

Even if Shastry is fit I don't know how effective he will be after
3 to 4 weeks of bed rest. I think selectors will be considering this
        pretty seriously.
