Asia Cup telecast on dish network in the US?

Post by Man » Fri, 02 Jul 2004 22:30:00

Its supposed to be on ARY DIGITAL. Lets hope they show it on ARY
DIGITAL in USA too and not sell the rights to the money-sucker dish
network!!!

Asia Cup 2004

The Asia Cup 2004 is scheduled to start from July 16, 2004 in Sri
Lanka. ARY DIGITAL Network is telecasting all the matches LIVE from
Sri Lanka. There are two groups in which the teams are divided. Group
A consist of Pakistan, Bangladesh & Hong Kong, Group B consist of Sri
Lanka, India & UAE.
The two rivals Pakistan & India will face each other again after
India's historic win against Pakistan in Pakistan.
The Asian Cricket Council has resurrected the Asia Cup tournament
after a four-year interval.

Thanks,

I saw the schedule on their website and even though India/UAE and
India/SL are covered, they are not showing all the matches.

But hey, for $20, what more should we expect? :-)

Why khali-pili people want to see this, I have no idea (the games that
is, not the navels). Everyone knows what is going to happen anyway...

From Debashish Dutta (Gang's buddy) and Clayton Murzello (nobody's
buddy), the following in the paper today:

----------------

Paradise won!

Right then, the Asia Cup begins on Friday. Whos going to win? The best
team, thats who and thats India.

Heres our prediction on exactly how Sourav and Co are going to proceed
from our first game   the slaughtering of UAE  to victory in the
final against Sri Lanka

July 16: India v UAE in Dambulla.
Start***ing your chops. So what's the world record for biggest total in
an ODI? 398 for 5?

That's under threat and the only thing that can save UAE is the toss. If
they win it, they should bat first and surrender for 50 or less. This
is not the scene we want. We want India batting first with Veeru
delivering the 200 that he says is possible in an ODI. In any case,
Harbhajan, back from long leave, will take four wickets.

Winner: India
Man of the Match: Bhajji

July 16: Bangladesh v Hong Kong in Colombo
We really dont care who wins this because it doesnt matter.

However, Bangladesh WAS a part of India at one time so we should
support it. But wait a minute, the Hong Kong captains called Rahul
Sharma and his opening bat is Manoj Cheruparambil surprisingly similar
to P T Usha's initial: Thekkeparamabil). Hmmm, so who should we
support?

Like we said, we don't care because it doesn't matter.

Winner: Irrelevant
Man of the Match: Even if we named him, you wouldn't know him

July 17: Pakistan v Bangladesh in Colombo
We remember two things: that Inzy & Co were hammered by the Bangladeshis
in the World Cup AND it took a huge effort for Pakistan to save the
Multan Test not too long ago. Pakistan should win this one, but were
not going to be surprised if they lose given their ability to please
the bookies.

Winner: Pakistan
Man of the Match: Inzy

July 17: Sri Lanka v UAE in Dambulla

Do not forget that it's only Day 2 and the UAE cricketers are still
picking pieces of themselves up from the field where Sehwag butchered
them. If you want entertainment, hope Lanka bats first. If you prefer
mercy, UAE should field second. We, of course, want to see no mercy.

Winner: Sri Lanka
Man of the Match: Somethingasinghe

July 18: Pakistan v Hong Kong in Colombo

The pros and yawns of this game is that Pakistan can use the tie to
experiment with new coach Bob Woolmer's inventions and strategies. They
should win even if they invert the entire batting order and send their
tail enders out to bat first.

Hong Kong can at best hope to startle their opponents by belting out
Bruce Lee (born in Kowloon, in Hong Kong) like shouts instead of
Howzatt!. Best taken in the spirit of International Cricket Council's
effort to spread cricket to newer countries.

July 18: Sri Lanka v India in Dambulla

Ok, THIS is where it gets interesting at least on paper.

Unfortunately, the Lankans have just returned home after a hiding by
the Aussies (whom India almost defeated). At best this is a match-up
between a side that is in the top 8 in the world and a side that is
in the top 2. India will win this by yards.

Most interesting feature: Sachin Tendulkar's handling of new Lanka
bowler Lasith Malinga. Malinga's action has been compared to Jeff
Thommo's except while Thommo had a slingshot delivery Malinga's is
more a blur of a whirr windmill style.

July 21: India v Pakistan in Colombo

This is a big match of the tournament. Or maybe not. The India-Pak
series earlier this year was so watched and so written about and so
debated in every house, shop, kitchen and establishment that the
myth of a clash with Pakistan is over.

This basically means that without pressure Sachin and Veeru will go
on the rampage and score 50 in 4 overs but then get out. However the
middle order will then come in to the shouts of e***d Indians who
(being thoroughly spoilt by Sachin and Veeru) have forgotten they
had a middle order and the Pakistanis will groan, as memories of
Kaif, Yuvraj and Laxman come dancing back.

Winner: India
Man of the Match: Muhammad Kaif

July 21: Sri Lanka v Bangladesh in Premadasa, Colombo

Another match that's irrelevant but since we MUST pick a winner, we'll
pick Lanka. We think a lot of people are going to be disappointed in
India with Lanka's performance because many still associate them with
the great team that won the '95 World Cup. They're not even a patch
on that team.

Winner: Sri Lanka
Man of the Match: Aravinda de Silva. All right, so he's not even IN
the team. So what?

July 23: India v Bangladesh

Medic! There are a few patients here you should look at. Biff! Pow!
Chop! Slam! Need we say more? We understand that Bangladesh might
move the United Nations complaining of human rights violations.

Winner: India
Man of the Match: Irfan

July 25: Pakistan v Sri Lanka in Colombo

Pakistan will lose this match. Lanka, being beaten by India, will get
a lot of stick from their lunatic fans (that flag-waving Percy and
others).

Pakistan on the other hand will NOT have its fans in the match (Chacha
will be denied a visa because he resembles someone on the CIA's
terrorist watch list). We do not think that fancy Bob Woolmer can
make a fighting unit out of a team that is always fighting itself.
Pakistan out.

Winner: Sri Lanka
Man of the Match: Percy

July 27: Bangladesh v Pakistan in Colombo

Bangladesh will collapse for less than 150 (which come to think of it
is quite good for Bangladesh).

Winner: Pakistan
Man of the Match: Shoaib Akhtar (no, we don't think so either, but
all the girls in the office want him)

July 29: India v Sri Lanka in Colombo

This is a shame because it's the final before the final. India and Sri
Lanka will be the finalists (remember, you read it here first). The
novelty of the final will therefore be not as, er, novel. We think
India will bat first and score 300. Lanka will start well but then
go for less than 240.

Winner: India
Man of the Match: Irfan

August 1: India v Sri Lanka in Colombo

This game will be an anti-climax because Lanka will by now have given
up all hope of ever being able to defeat the awesome Indian batting
line-up. They will try, therefore, to bat first and put up a big
total that might put the magnificent seven under pressure. Sorry!
that's 250 all out and Sachin and Veeru will eat them for lunch.

Winner: India!
Man of the Match: Sachin

Noway  in Dambulla. Maximum India can get is 291.

Anyway wishful and creative thinking by Sadiq

Cheru - Small
Parambu - compound or small piece of land
Thus, Cheruparambil => (s)he of the small compound.

Thekke - Southern
Parambu - as above.
Thekkeparambil => (s)he of the south compound.

LOL Sadiq for the hilarious write-up.

Is the scorecard for the India warm-up match available anywhere? I have only
read of the 4 bowlers who each took 2 wickets but don't know about the
remaining 2 wickets - presumably taken by Pathan and Khan.

But I am sure that CIL wants to know what is happening to the navels :-)

Interestingly, I read somewhere that Manoj topscored for HK in their warm-up
match - which they however lost badly :-)

I see some things haven't changed around here...

Hah! Doesn't matter my foot!

1. Rahul Sharma of course is Rahul Sharma of Delhi Ranji Trophy fame.
What? You haven't heard of him? He played one game in 1986/87 and
scored 16 in his only innings - against the mighty Himachal Pradesh.
He's still only 44, so underestimate him at your peril.

2. Don't mess with Mojo. He can bat a little bit. He's actually a
chance for the odd run in the tournament, if he's in good nick.

Who is this idiot knocking Hong Kong cricket. Honestly. Just because
the standards have gone downhill over the last 10 years or so. Watch
out for a huge upset - Pakistan just might sneak this one.
