Time to give AWAY-Test wins more weigtage

This has been mulling inside me for long.  It is time to give more
weightage for AWAY-wins for both the Test and One-day and maybe even
the T20s.  That will make the system fair enough and put home pitch tigers
and lions and kanagaroos, and emus, and other animals in their place and
opt for a more level playing field.  An Away-Series-tie should count
as good as a win.  In fact, even a 1-3 loss overseas should have some
good points for the lone away victory.

I had been thinking about this too, and thought that perhaps one of the ways would be to maintain maintain a separate "home only" and "away only" ratings table for last N years so track the home form and away form of every team and then combine those ratings to get the final rankings (e.g. a win in india against home tigers india will get more points to a team as compared to a win against india when india is touring.. weighted by india's "recent" home vs away form).

Having said that, one could certainly keep digging into these things and realize that it doesn't improve things all that much. e.g. why go just by "home/away" form? why not increase resolution to "fast pitch/spinning pitch" form? as in, surely Australia's "away form" is a combination of their performance in england/NZ/SA and in India/Pak/SL which are two completely different things. it isn't clear why taking one step towards tracking home/away better if it misses these nuances anyway. also, if your team is like India which seems to have 2 years of home matches followed by 2 of away matches, you'll always struggle to have enough recent data to have any meaningful home/away ratings. it doesn't make much sense to keep ratings for results that are more than 3 or so years old because most teams have anyway changed entirely in 4 years.

just thinking aloud...

Also Tyagi-ji:

In soccer, esp when it comes to the Word Cup or Continental Cup qualifications, AWAY goals and wins do matter.  Why can't the same be adopted for cricket.

it can, which is exactly what I had written in the first paragraph. the second paragraph was merely trying to point out that a truely unbiased metric might have to be more complicated than just a simple home/away tracking. Soccer is not quite cricket. the home/away advantage in soccer isn't nearly as complicated as in cricket, where "away" might mean SA, Eng or India, each having very different pros and cons for teams like Australia or SL to play at.

Rahul
sarcastic? seriously?

Away goals do count more but only in very limited circumstances, only
in the knock out competitions and then only in a 2 legged matches
where the combined score over the 2 legs is tied.

Away wins to my knowledge do not count different anywhere

If a cricket team want to be considered good it has to be able to win
away from home in all conditions, simple as that.
