bye - the winning run!

it was against england, if i remember right. india needed one run to win
and had 2 or 3 wickets, i guess. kirmani and another batsman were at the
crease. the bowler ( a pace bowler ) bowled and the ball was outside the
offstump. kirmani just let it go and scampered across for a single before
the 'keeper had gathered the ball!! that gave india a win and ended the
match on a humorous note.
another instance of an anti-climactic ending was when gifford bowled a
no-ball when one run was needed and india won the test.
so, india HAS won a few tests! That's great!!!  :-):-):-)

It was Kirmani and Kapil Dev who took a bye to win the Madras test.
But there is more to it. This kind of " Bye " was started by Kirmani only.
It was against Pakistan when India had lost 9 wickets and Kirmani and Chandra
were playing. It was the series of 78-79 though I don't remember whether it
was second or third test. Chandra is known to be a poor batsman so Kirmani
was trying to keep him away from batting and he succeeded for quite a few
overs. Then this happened. Sarfaraz was bowling and it was the last delivery
of the over. Kirmani was sure that it's going to be a bouncer so that he can't
take a single. So Kirmani and Chandra had a little talk. As predicted Sarfaraz
bowled a bouncer, but Kirmani started running before the ball reached the
keeper,Wasim Bari and they completed the " bye ". However even after their
brave effort,India could not save the match.
So when India was batting against England in Madras,Kirmani decided to
repeat that. The difference was other batsman was Kapil and,YES India was
 winning.

I think this was against the West Indies at Madras in 1978-79.
I think the last time India won a test in Madras against England was
in 1971.

when india went to west indies in 1982-83 (just before the world cup), in one
of the test matches ( no. 4, i think, in barbados) WI needed just 1 run to win
in their second innings after the total of both indian innings just equalled
the WI 1st innings. kirmani then opened the bowling, took  a run up from the
sightscreen and delivered a no ball. so WI got a 10 wicket win without a legal
ball in the 2nd innings. i doubt that this has happened before.

That was the fourth test of the ***. At the end of this innings, the
West Indian scorecard read:

        Greenidge       not out         0
        Haynes          not out         0
        Extras                          1
        Total           (for no loss)   1

        Bowling:

        Kirmani     0.0  0  0  0

This was the first time that kirmani had ever bowled in a test! So, this is
what his test record looked like.

By the way, had this been one of the recent matches, with the no-balls and
wides being credited to the bowler, the analysis would have been:

        Kirmani     0.0  0  1  0

i.e., zero balls bowled, and one run conceded.

the winning run ( for India ) against the Kalicharan led WI at the
Madras test in 1979 ( ?? ) was also a bye. interestingly the batsmen involved
were kirmani and kapil dev ( kirmani facing i think ), and interestingly kirmani
( i think ) let go of the ball and scampered for a single and the keeper ( david
murray ) collected the ball and rolled it down ( it missed the stumps of course :) )
The bowler, i think was malcom marshall, then a nobody ( or close to it )

the man of the match was good ol gundappa viswanath. kapil tokk a lot of wickets,
if i remember right. kalicharan scored a brilliant 98 ( his nemesis was venkatraghavan ).

:)

The winning run in the 3rd test at Madras in 1972-73 was also
a no ball or a bye, I think (against Eng). The batsmen at the crease
were  Pataudi and Durrani. But I am not too sure. Could someone
 verify this.
