South African Cricket and the excitement....

Post by stal.. » Wed, 18 Aug 1993 00:43:01

South Africa enriches both Test and One-day cricket
by its exciting fielding, genuine fast bowling and
enterprise. In a few years they will be the team to beat.
I have not seen them in action. Of course Zimbabwe's
fielding, which I saw, was so energetic and entertaining
to watch, and I imagine they have the spirit moulded
after their neighbours. A full fledged SA-WI tour, say
a couple of years from now would set standards to the
        cricket of 90's and beyond.

At this point, I see an enthusiast or two say Mahanama
will handle Donald and the like. I do not disagree with
Mahanama's class, but frankly don't think SL has
a chance against RSA. We'll certainly hope for exciting
        cricket.

That may be so, but you must remember that the current
South African team has an inherrent weakness against spin.
But on the other hand, if they can perform as they have performed
against the Board XI, then let the celebrations start :))

The one thing that the current side has a lot of is enthusiam and
youth. Granted that Jimmy Cook is in the side :)) The "youngster"
of the side. Looking back, Cook might be the person to give the
other players the confidence in playing the spin. Lets hope so

Here's to a good enjoyable series.

Isn't it about time you stop complaining about umpires and
start playing cricket.

I have no doubt the Sri Lankan umpires are as good as the
Indian umpires - may be I should remind you of what many
visiting cricket teams have said about the standard of
umpiring in India.

On the same topic - isn't it amazing how the loosing teams
always find an excuse for their performances - the umpire
or the ball was doctored etc........

There r going to be neutral umpires for the Tests only. After an initial
objection by the Sri Lankan's about the match referee, they have now
accepted John Reed as the match referee. The ODI and DNI's will however be
umpired by local (Sri Lankan) umpires.
