handling the ball..

Hi cricketers:

i think how Gooch got out in the second inning of the 1st test is pretty
well known. I want to know what if Gooch use his foot or legs to kick
the ball instead of "handling it"..

Thanks

As was discussed in several articles on rsc following Gooch's dismissal, it
is OK to use either your legs (assuming there is no danger of LBW --- i.e. if
you have already hit the ball once (as Gooch had) or the ball pitched outside
the leg-stump or whatever) or your bat to knock the ball away in such a
situation. I suppose that it should be OK to use any part of your body except
a hand not holding the bat, again assuming that there is no danger of LBW.
One problem with trying to use your bat or legs is the possibility of being
out hit-wicket; perhaps weighed against the certainty of being out "handled
the ball", it's worth the risk.

Hmmm....I think Gooch has to find some other way of getting himself
out in the second test; atleast that would move this discussion off
the RSC...:o) :o)

:-)Hi cricketers:

Then he would have been a lot more supple than most other 40-year-olds; that
ball was fairly high above the stumps... :)

But seriously, he would not have been out (at least, not from *that* delivery).
He couldn't have been out LBW, as his bat had already touched the ball.  He
couldn't have been out caught, as the ball went straight from his bat into the
ground.

I recall Robbie Kerr doing just as you suggest in a one-dayer, and the
commentators praising him for his quick thinking.

:-)Thanks

No probs.
