The person who tops the list of best fast bowling action is :
Micheal Holding, followed by Dennis Lillee, Allan Donald, Waqar Younus,
Richard Headlee. Any comments are appreciated.

A topic tossed about once in a while, but any way...
There was a guy called Lindwall, and I have heard
(not seen tho) that he was the smoothest of them all.
You also missed that Khan chap.

how can you put waqar up there   ?  no doubt he is very good, but his
action is not smooth or classical.  May be that explains lot of the
injuries he persistently had.  Thompson didn't had the best stride but his

up straight, and came down in perfect arc synchonously the other went up
,  and the elbows were straight and stuff like that....was the best
(atleast that's what coaches said).  Hey, Kapil had a fluid action, arms
and legs used to cross classically.  Sarfaz was smooth.   How about the
worst? Roger Binny the javelin thrower and Sanjeev Sharma!!

Hi,
Khan, (Imran, if you're ref. to him only), did'nt have the smoothest of
actions, his final jump/leap not exactly having a +ve effect. At least I
for one thought his injuries were due mainly to this.

Syed's order is nice except for the fact that Waqar and Holding are a
bit above the rest.

Bye,

Well the best fast bowling action would have to be that of the great Sir
Richard Hadlee.
It is smooth and uncomplicated with grace and almost mechanical precision.
He has a perfect "text book" action.

Well actually I mentioned those whom I have personally seen. I really
dont believe on others unless I see them. Imran khan also has a very
smooth action, but there is a break in the run up at the very end. If
you see Holding, Waqar, Lillee , they are as smooth as wind. As far as
Lindwall is concerned, I have no idea and I would never put him ahead of
Holding, unless I see him.

Thanks any way.

Nope, David Johnson holds this distinction.  The world's fastest-ever
runup and slowest relative delivery!

Regarding the discussion on Ray Lindwall, I have had the pleasure of
watching him when he was age 38 bowl 36 overs three wkts at Eden
Gardens.  Even as a small boy clearly remember his fluid and
accelerating runup, even though another magnificent bowler, Alan
Davidson, was operating at the other end.  IMHO Imran matches Lindwall
in poetry of action.  I confess not having seen enough of Holding to
compare unequivocally.

According to Karnataka wicket keeper David Johnson is capable of bowling
faster than Srinath. He lacks line and length. It will be good once he
improves that. He is young and can improve. So let's wait. Fast bowlers
are not made overnight.

Narayanan

P.S. Tahir Naqquash was known as a bowler who ran faster than he bowled.

Harold Larwood - top of all - beauty and elegance, and danger.
Lillee and Holding yes, but Donald and Waqar as well as being not
technically 'pure' I'd say, are not elegant or graceful enough.
I would also include Ray Lindwall, Gary Sobers and Glenn McGrath - the
best of all the moderns.

Yes indeed!  Larwood's action is recorded in the Wills video on world's
greatest bowlers.  Absolutely fabulous bowling action.  The last step
has his entire body *** from the waist to add thrust to the
delivery.

For me Michael Holding (whispering death,***ie Bird once called him
and said he had to look back as he couldn't hear him running in even
close to the wicket), then Courtney Walsh (a lot like Holding), Ray
Lindwall, Alan Donald, Wes Hall, Richard Hadley (despite John Arlott's
description of him "like Groucho Marks hassling a waitress") and Graham
Dilley (once they had straightened out his occasional chucking). I would
have no objection to bracketing Walsh, Donald and Lindwall.
The one that currently intrigues me is Wasim Akram with his easy run
in and the pace he can generate without hardly a notice.
The ugliest would be Bob Willis and Colin Croft, may be Waqar Younis
fits this list also, not too much wrong with his bowling action, mainly
his run up and delivery stride. Once Ted Dexter branded Bob Willis as a
chucker and Willis rightly pointed out that if he chucked he would
certainly break his neck.

Interesting to note: Bradman showed a film/pictures of a left handed bowler
to some team mates (or such) and asked if the thought he was chucking. They
agreed the bowler looked like a chucker. He reversed the film to show it was
a right handed bowler: Harold Larwood. Freak ball or not?
