Aus innings without individual 50

Larry asked:
"Given Australia's loss in the 5th and final test at the S.C.G. to the
Poms.....I pose the following question:

Prior to this loss, when was the last time Australia lost/won a test
match
whereby not one player made 50 in an entire innings?? Me thinks it
would
have been a long time since an Australian team has gone thru an
innings and
not one player got a half century. Your thoughts......"

Almost happened on the last tour of England, one score of 54!
On the previous tour (97) it happened 3 times, twice in one game!

So not as rare as you might think even against England, still England
are the only team that seems to be able to win a test in Aus in recent
years.  ;-)

Yes, and it's very commendable. Aus have swept RSA, Pak, Ind, SL
3-0, and the WI 5-0 on their respective last tours to Aus. NZ
drew the series 0-0. Which leaves Eng as the only visiting team
to win a Test in Aus in the last...something like 5 or 6 years
(as you suggest, Eng had won one on its previous tour as well).

If neither McGrath nor Warne make it to the next Ashes series in
Eng,   I'd expect Eng to be more than competitive, and to have a
decent chance of reclaiming the Ashes.

Lets make it more difficult. No individual 50s in Aus.  In fact no
individual 30s.

Being an SA Supporter I can only think of one example in Jan 1994, Sydney.
In fact no-one got above 30. SA won by 5 runs. Pitch broke up big time and
Jonty Rhodes 76 no in SA's 2nd innings won it. Bradman had lots of nice
things to say about that innings. SA went 1 up in the series. Series was
drawn 1-1

Australia 2nd innings (target: 117 runs)                        R
MA Taylor             c Richardson       b de Villiers         27
MJ Slater                                b de Villiers
1
DC Boon               c Kirsten          b de Villiers             24
TBA May               lbw                b de Villiers              0
ME Waugh              lbw                b Donald                  11
*AR Border                               b Donald                       7
DR Martyn             c Hudson           b Donald                  6
+IA Healy                                b de Villiers
1
SK Warne              run out
1
CJ McDermott          not out                                          29
GD McGrath                           c & b de Villiers                1
Extras                (lb 3)
3
Total                 (all out, 56.3 overs)
111

What happened in the Aus 2nd innings?
a) As I said Pitch broke up
b) Damien Martyn batted for a long time for his 6 and then hit out to be
caught in the covers
c) Fanie de Villiers bowled wonderfully. As a Fast Medium he bowled 23.3 of
the 56 overs. Took 6 wickets.
Captain tried to take him off and he begged to carry on
d) Craig McDermott showed wonderful fight and almost won it for Aus. Then
Martyn blew it
e) Martyn was banished soon after and took tiome to return

Amazing how those moments are so vivid. I remember very little of Test 3
when Aus levelled it.
Series 1-1

What a game (for SA anyway)

Aus then won the next series.

Cheers
Dave

I've been saying for 18 months that I think the next side to beat
Australia in a series will be England, either in 2005 or 2006-7. Nice
to see someone else coming round to that view.

Cheers,

Mike
