Big win followed by a big loss

Big win followed by a big loss

Hi Aslam,

Couple of arbitrary questions :

(1) The head-to-head results of India-Australia one
days show that in the 1983 world cup, Australia won
the first match by 162 runs, while India won the
return match by 118. The biggest turn around should
definitely by the first two matches when Pakistan last
toured South Africa - SAF won the first by 132, Pak
the second by 182. Can you please provide a list of
turn arounds over, say, 200 runs or 15 wickets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A. 100-run win followed by 100-run loss in consecutive Limited-over
International matches against the same opponent:
Aus bt Ind by 162 runs  Nottingham     Jun 13, 1983
Ind bt Aus by 118 runs  Chelmsford     Jun 20, 1983
Pak bt SL  by 110 runs  Paarl          Apr  9, 1998
SL  bt Pak by 115 runs  Benoni         Apr 15, 1998
SAf bt Pak by 132 runs  Durban         Dec  8, 2002
Pak bt SAf by 182 runs  Port Elizabeth Dec 11, 2002
B. A difference of at least fif*** wickets in consecutive wins and
losses against the same opponent in Limited-overs International
matches:
Aus bt WI  by  7 wkts   Sydney         Nov 24, 1981
WI  bt Aus by  8 wkts   Peth           Dec 20, 1981
Pak bt NZ  by 10 wkts   Sharjah        Apr 15, 1986
NZ  bt Pak by  8 wkts   Dunedin        Feb  6, 1989
WI  bt NZ  by 10 wkts   Christchurch   Mar 29, 1987
NZ  bt WI  by  5 wkts   Auckland       Mar  8, 1992
NZ  bt Pak by  7 wkts   Hamilton       Mar 14, 1989
Pak bt NZ  by  8 wkts   Sharjah        May  1, 1990
WI  bt Pak by 10 wkts   Melbourne      Feb 23, 1992
Pak bt WI  by  5 wkts   Perth          Dec  4, 1992
Aus bt Pak by  7 wkts   Multan         Oct 14, 1994
Pak bt Aus by  9 wkts   Rawalpindi     Oct 22, 1994
SAf bt Pak by  7 wkts   Johannesburg   Dec 10, 1994
Pak bt SAf by  8 wkts   Durban         Dec 17, 1994
Aus bt WI  by  8 wkts   Sydney         Dec  8, 1996
WI  bt Aus by  7 wkts   Brisbane       Jan  5, 1997
SL  bt Pak by  6 wkts   Colombo        Jul  9, 2000
Pak bt SL  by  9 wkts   Nairobi        Oct  8, 2000
SAf bt NZ  by  6 wkts   Sydney         Feb  8, 2002
NZ  bt SAf by  9 wkts   Johannesburg   Feb 16, 2003
SL  bt Pak by  8 wkts   Colombo        Sep 12, 2002
Pak bt SL  by  7 wkts   Sharjah        Apr  4, 2003
SL  bt SAf by  7 wkts   Benoni         Dec  1, 2002
SAf bt SL  by  8 wkts   Kimberley      Dec  4, 2002
(2) I tried to do the same for test matches and found
two instances when the opposing teams won consecutive
tests by an innings - Eng v Aus 1965-6 and Eng v WI in
1966. Are there any other instances when this has
happened in the same series ? How many instances are
there when the same thing happened in consecutive
tests between the same teams but over different series
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A. An innings win followed by an innings loss in consecutive matches
against the same opponent in a Test series:

Ind bt Pak by Inns+ 70  Delhi          1952-53
Pak bt Ind by Inns+ 43  Lucknow        1952-53

Eng bt Aus by Inns+ 93  Sydney         1965-66
Aus bt Eng by Inns+  9  Adelaide       1965-66

WI  bt Eng by Inns+ 55  Leeds          1966
Eng bt WI  by Inns+ 34  The Oval       1966

B. An innings win followed by an innings loss in consecutive matches
against the same opponent not in one Test series:

Eng bt Aus by Inns+579  The Oval       1938
Aus bt Eng by Inns+332  Brisbane       1946-47

Eng bt Aus by Inns+  4  Melbourne(6)   1974-75
Aus bt Eng by Inns+ 85  Birmingham     1975

Ind bt Aus by Inns+100  Bombay         1979-80
Aus bt Ind by Inns+  4  Sydney         1980-81

NZ  bt Pak by Inns+185  Hamilton       2000-01
Pak bt NZ  by Inns+324  Lahore         2002

I would have expected India to be there at least once here, with their
inconsistency.

Big win followed by a big loss

Couple more facts about the NZ-Pakistan wins and losses mentioned at the
end:

1) New Zealand's innings and 185-run win at Hamilton was its biggest Test
victory against any opponent. I believe it was also Pakistan's heaviest Test
loss against any country.

2) The innings and 324-run defeat NZ suffered at Lahore was its biggest ever
in Tests. Not sure whether it was also Pakistan's biggest Test win.

3) Stephen Fleming was the NZ captain in both games, so currently has the
distinction of having led NZ to both its biggest Test win and biggest Test
defeat, against the same opponent in consecutive Tests (albeit in different
series and in different countries).

Best Regards

One minor quibble.  The two matches in question were not against the same
opponents: the first involved The Pakistan Impersonators, the second Real
Pakistan.
