Hick Hick Cronje

Hi,

The reuter report says that Hick got out driving meekly at Donald's
slower ball. If my memory serves me right, I can think of quite a
few occasions when he has got out in similar fashion - mistiming
or driving meekly and giving catch to midoff/midwicket/cover area.
He seems to have real problem with the change of pace. But since
he plays well in the counties, the only possible reason could be
"the pressure gets to him". Any comments ?

Was Cronje really laughing when he was given out caught behind ?
What did the replays show ? Can we add him and Cullinan as some
more umpiring casulties of this test ?

  Cheers,

  Sachin

It wasn't clear to me whether he got a very thin edge or not.

Not Cullinan. IIRC, that decision looked reasonable. The unlucky lbw
victim was Liebenburg, yet another to get an undetected edge onto his
pad. If it's any consolation, I thought quite a few lbw appeals were
correctly turned down this afternoon, when on previous form one
suspected they might be given as out!

With all due respect, you have to be really one eyed looking at the
replays to feel Cullinan was out.

Hansie Cronje was 'smiling' when given out.  He indicated that he did not
think he was out.  Replay was not conclusive.  There was a sound.  It was
possible it was bat on pad.  However, bat was very close to the ball.  It
is possible the bat hit the pad and ball simultaneously.

Actually, I think that's the problem. The television camera is one-eyed. We
need stereo-vision cameras and special glasses / viewing equipment to watch
replays so that we get a proper perception of depth and can see what's
actually happening. Anyone with lots of money want to suggest it? ;)

Well, I don't know about one-eyed but I *am* very short-sighted, and
thus clearly would be well qualified to be an umpire :)

You'll need to be deaf and jet-lagged as well, of course.
