Wow, you actually made me look something up - I had no idea why he was nick
named 'roy' either - but now I do :)

Probably makes no sense unless you've watched Australian Basketball.  Must
have been nicknamed a long time ago, cause with his hair the way it is now i
seem absolutely no resemblence to leroy loggins...

Odd, but if IRC this reference is wrong and the "Roy" came from Roy Rene,
an old time Australian vaudeville comedian who had an Al Jolson "Mammy"
style makeup, the reference being to Symonds' darker skin colour and the
white "zinc cream" that he uses on his face (superstitiously even wearing
it under lights during ODOs).

The actual reason is that he's a latter day Phanto. Symonds was (is?) a big
fan of the soccer comic strip 'Roy of The Rovers."
