Rookies of 1996

Post by Subramanya R » Sun, 26 Jan 1997 04:00:00

A la most American sports journalists, I was thinking about those
freshmen cricketers who made a splash in 1996. So lets check on the Rookie
of the year awards.

Qualifications: debut (test or 1-day) in latter half of 1995 or later.

Here are my nominees and favourites. Due to lack of research, I may have
missed out on some. Do correct me if so.

ROOKIE BAT OF THE YEAR:
Nominees: Nick Knight, Mohammed Wasim, Rahul Dravid

Surprisingly I couldn't think of too many. IMHO, a toss up between Wasim
and Dravid. But since MW didnt have a big run in 1996, I would give the
award to Dravid (home bias :) )

PS: Saurav Ganguly is not a rookie. This was his second coming

ROOKIE BOWLER OF THE YEAR:
Nomns: Saqlain Mushtaq, Paul Adams, Shaun Pollock, a few pakistani pacers

No question here: Saqlain it has to be.

ROOKIE ALLROUNDER OF THE YEAR:
Nomns: Shahid Afridi, Lance Klusener and ??

Lance Klusener because he had a good run in both tests and 1-days.

ROOKIE WICKET-KEEPER:

?????

And Finally, the ROOKIE MVP award goes to Saqlain Mushtaq

Possibly the world's best off-spinner.

Aw, come on. NK got his test century in 96 and almost batted England to a
victory aginst very negative bowling in Bulawayo. He also got 2 ODI
centuries in consecutive days, and has a big ODI average.

Weren't Adams and certainly Pollock's debuts earlier than this?

OK, I correct myself. A closer examination tells me that Knight's year has
been a bit better than Dravid's ( I remembered the ODI hundreds but the
test ones had slipped past my view) but not by far. His high ODI average
may be due to the fact that he's played only 6 of them. Furthermore,
Dravid's 3rd test performance in SA was in 1997 and doesn't count, I
guess.

Their debuts were against England in Nov/Dec 1995, the records say. So
they count.

If you stretched your criteria I think Nathan Astle would rate a mention.
Played several one day matches in early 1995, but he didn't make his test
debut until 1996 (I think).  He scored three one day centuries and two
test centuries (against the West Indies - at home) in the 95-96 season.

Rookie All-rounder of the year is Shahid Afridi (no doubt about that)

Nick Knight had his debut against the West Indies in 1995.  True, it
was in the latter half of the year, but only just.  So I don't think
he qualifies.

Since he played quite a few games in 1995, and did very well already
then, I'd be tempted to have him as rookie bowler of that year and
disqualify him for 1996.

I might be tempted to go for Prasad, although his ODI debut was ages
ago.  Barring that, I'd say Pollock, with Mohd Zahid as runner-up.

I think the only candidate is Lee Germon, and even he had his ODI
debut in 1994 it turns out.  Adam Gilchrist played 2 ODIs in 1996,
but his record from those is hardly noteworthy.  The same goes for
Steve Palframan's 7 ODIs.

Surely he would not qualify as a rookie if he had played enough?
He has been around +-6months which must qualify him as a rookie.
