Enough Mark Taylor bashing; Hayden's time will come, but
after the seniors retire... perhaps in 5 years time we might
see a batting line-up for Australia like:

        Hayden
        Slater
        Langer
        Ponting
        Bevan
        Lehmann/Hodge/?

Then again, a lot can happen in 5 years...

But on to other matters; I'm curious as  to what the general
consensus is on who's the best off-spinner in cricket today. Terrible
Tim May? Venkatapathy Raju? Peter (cough) Such (he IS an offie isn't he?)?
Carl Hooper or Roger Harper? Dipak (haha) Patel? Or that bowler from
Sri Lanka whose name I can't seem to recall. When was the last time
an off-spinner took 5 or more wickets in a test match anyhow?

Actually, Australia could well do with Greg Matthews, now that
he's got his hair transplant; watching Greg frolick in the ocean in those
Advanced Hair Studio ads makes me wonder how many wickets he'd bag ;P

It's always good to drop the story of the episode of Star Trek when Kirk
and Spock come back to the earth of the 60s. Finding a big old reel-to-
reel computer, they say 'Look, a primitive computer'. You can note smugly
that we can now agree with them.

Raju is a left arm spinner. You might want to add Rajesh
Chauhan to the list.

The bowler from Sri Lanka is Muthaiah Muralidharan. He was the last
off spinner to take five wickets in an innings (against India, last
year).

The best off spinner in the world cricket at the moment is Sri Lanka's
Muttiah Muralithran who has taken 55 wikets in 15 matches with an
average close to 30. He has had 3 five wiket hauls and he took 5 wikets
in last February against India in India in the first test between Sl and
India. (which is after May took 5 wickets against WI). This is
confirmed by his Coopers and Laybran rating where he has been among
the top ten bowlers consistantly during past year.Even Kumara
Dharmasena (another rather fastish off -spineer similar to Anil Kumble
in pace) of Sri Lanka has taken six wickets against Pakisthan only two
monthas ago.

Is that Symcox? or the guy who took 4 or 5 wickets in a one dayer and
then got his for 60 in the next and was never heard from again. I just
can not remember his name. Neither impressed me though.

That would be Dave Rundle, the offie who took 4/42 on debut (One Day).
Seemed to have a lot more variety than Symcox (although I suppose that
isnt saying much) and would be worth a gamble IMHO on a turner...
certainly Symcox has proven time and time again that he isnt test
material....

The South African offie - I forget his name - impressed me when he was in
Aus, unfortunately he didn't get much fo a bowl due to selection policy and
a slight loss of form.
The last offie I can recall getting 5 in a test was Tim May in Adelaide
against the windies where he picked up 5 for stuff all in the memorable
match where Aus lost by 1 run. Also scored usefully in the second innings.

Tim May took 5-65 in Hobart last year against New Zealand.
