Australia 'ey? No, Australia 'A'...
The squad does look a bit lop sided with so many openers, but reflects the
state of Aussie cricket at the moment. Consider Taylor, Slater and Rod
Davison in NSW, Elliott in Vic., Hills and Cox in Tassie, Hussey and
Campbell in WA, Hayden and Love in Qld... we have plenty to choose from!
I don't think we're quite as strong in the middle-order.
Campbell will keep bat in the middle-order, I'd imagine. I've waiting for
WA to try it, but the Aussie selector's have beaten them to it. If he can
adapt to batting at 6 or 7, then he'll make a lot of Australian tours. A
guy who can keep wicket, open the batting or bat in the middle, will be a
prized member of any touring squad. Let's see if he can do it!
Hussey might also have to bat in the middle - he generally bats at 6 in
one-dayers for WA, so should be okay...
Hayden, Hills, DiVenuto, Martyn, Symonds, Hussey, Campbell,
two of Julian/Dale/Bichel, Gillespie, Miller/B.Young.
One more middle-order bat would round it out, but it looks pretty good.
Alternatively, they could play:
Hayden, Hills/Hussey, DiVenuto, Martyn, Symonds, Campbell,
Julian, Bichel, BYoung, Gillespie, Dale/Miller.
Having Julian, Bichel and Brad Young in the squad - all excellent lower
order batsmen - gives them the option of dropping one of the batsmen out.
I think it's a good squad; a mixture of 'potential' (I hate that word!)
with Hussey, DiVenuto, Symonds, BYoung, Campbell, and recognition for
consistent performace with Julian, Miller, Hills, Hayden...
There may be too many openers, but if they can prove their adaptability
to the selector's, it will help their cause in the future.
Great to see Gillespie named. He desperately needs the match practice.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope he 1) plays every game, and
2) gets through them unharmed! I can't wait to see him action again. :-))
MAC the Vic!
