I just heard Abdul Qadir almost froth at the mouth on TMS about Inzy's
dismissal.  But what got me was he said he never got anyone out that way.  I
just heard him saying it AGAIN to Graham Gooch.  "I played for 17 years and
I used to hit batsman three times that way and never was I given it out."

I remember Mike Gatting sweeping a mile down the pitch and being hit
outside off and being given out to the purer-than-snow during that infamous
tour of 1987.  What I found interesting in this conversation was Jim Maxwell
joined in and said Warne has this way of working the umpire up with his
appeals until he eventually gets one.

Some things never change.  Australian and English players were quite
cynical in the eighties of how Qadir's over-appealing (often even more
hysterical than Warne's) used to give him a few extra wickets as well.

That's nothing. Willis was quoted as saying "He would never stoop so
low as to earn money criticising cricketers" (para.). This was after
the Headingley 1981 test, when he and Botham complained about
Journalists being soooo unreasonable as to suggest that a team
that was down to the level of 401/9 vs 180 odd and 135/7 hadn't
played very well up to that point.

I don't know if you Aussies have heard Willis especially commentate,
but you've probably heard miserable Fred Trueman "I dont know
whats going on out there". Multiply this by a factor of about
1,000 and you have Willis. Let's put it this way, if Grieg is balanced
and keeps his cool when the game gets exciting, Willis is
positive about the cricketers.

I'm still trying to work out what you're saying there.

But it did bring to mind the way in which the wearisome Willis will
attempt to convince the somnolent viewer that some utterly tedious
foregone conclusion of a Sunday League match is somehow tense and
thrilling. You can tell the producer has just told him it's time to bang
the drum for Sky Sport's Spectacular Summer of Shite, or whatever
they're calling it this year, so we get Bob creakingly faking
enthusiasm. Since he sounds as though the sky has just fallen in on him
at the best of times, you can imagine how this grates as an injury-hit
Derbyshire slide to defeat against Durham with bad batsmen playing bad
shots against bad balls to get themselves out.

Cheers,

Mike

He should have been given out a few overs earlier anyway. Gave him the
opportunity to have a few more vats of trifle before lunch.

What amuses me is occasionally (and it's usually David Gower)
when they have to generate e***ment they take the mickey. I
can remember him commenting on some darts match or other,
along the lines of "Well, when this game is over we're all going to
rush home and watch that", and the rest of the team joining in.
