Q for Aslam: consecutive 150+ partnerships

Post by vijaykum.. » Thu, 05 Aug 2010 02:32:07

Aslam,
in the previous test between Ind & SL, SL piled on 150+
partnerships for each of their 2nd, 3rd and 4th wickets
while Sehwag & Vijay replied with 165 for the 1st wicket
making it four in a row.

What is the record for most consecutive 150+ partnerships
in a match? an innings?

Vijay

I found six previous instances of 4 150+ partnerships in a Test:

Wkt/Rns Batsman One/Batsman Two      Ct  Op   Venue       Season     T#  mi
===========================================================================
 2/237  Pankaj Roy/VL Manjrekar      Ind WI   Kingston    1952-53   371   1
 4/213  FMM Worrell/CL Walcott       WI  Ind  Kingston    1952-53   371   2
 3/197  FMM Worrell/EdeC Weekes      WI  Ind  Kingston    1952-53   371   2
 4/150  Pankaj Roy/PR Umrigar        Ind WI   Kingston    1952-53   371   3

 2/154  RC Fredericks/IVA Richards   WI  Eng  The Oval    1976      781   1
 3/191  IVA Richards/LG Rowe         WI  Eng  The Oval    1976      781   1
 4/174  IVA Richards/CH Lloyd        WI  Eng  The Oval    1976      781   1
 1/182* RC Fredericks/CG Greenidge   WI  Eng  The Oval    1976      781   3

 5/156  RJ Shastri/RN Kapil Dev      Ind WI   St John's   1982-83   956   1
 1/296  CG Greenidge/DL Haynes       WI  Ind  St John's   1982-83   956   2
 6/207  PJL Dujon/CH Lloyd           WI  Ind  St John's   1982-83   956   2
 2/200  AD Gaekwad/M Amarnath        Ind WI   St John's   1982-83   956   3

 3/179  BC Lara/JC Adams             WI  Eng  St John's   1993-94  1259   1
 4/183  BC Lara/KLT Arthurton        WI  Eng  St John's   1993-94  1259   1
 5/219  BC Lara/S Chanderpaul        WI  Eng  St John's   1993-94  1259   1
 3/303  MA Atherton/RA Smith         Eng WI   St John's   1993-94  1259   2

 2/155  W Jaffer/R Dravid            Ind WI   St John's   2001-02  1602   1
 7/217  VVS Laxman/A Ratra           Ind WI   St John's   2001-02  1602   1
 5/186  CL Hooper/S Chanderpaul      WI  Ind  St John's   2001-02  1602   2
 6/166  S Chanderpaul/RD Jacobs      WI  Ind  St John's   2001-02  1602   2

 5/163* Inzamam-ul-Haq/Shahid Afridi Pak Ind  Faisalabad  2005-06  1782   1
 2/197  R Dravid/VVS Laxman          Ind Pak  Faisalabad  2005-06  1782   2
 6/210  MS Dhoni/IK Pathan           Ind Pak  Faisalabad  2005-06  1782   2
 3/242  Younis Khan/Mohammad Yousuf  Pak Ind  Faisalabad  2005-06  1782   3

In two of those (#781 & #1259) there were 3 in succession. There have been
63 instances of three in a match, a few of those might have been in the
same innings, but 3 in one innings is the record anyway. Four in succession
is a new record.

Caveat: I haven't included any partnerships in the last 17 or so Tests, my
files are not up to date.

I'm sure Aslam will confirm or correct later.

Here is a modification of Brian's table.

5/256  SR Tendulkar/SK Raina          Ind SL   Colombo(SSC) 2010     2

2/237  Pankaj Roy/VL Manjrekar        Ind WI   Kingston     1952-53  1

5/186  CL Hooper/S Chanderpaul        WI  Ind  St John's    2001-02  2
6/166  S Chanderpaul/RD Jacobs        WI  Ind  St John's    2001-02  2

5/163* Inzamam-ul-Haq/Shahid Afridi   Pak Ind  Faisalabad   2005-06  1
2/197  R Dravid/VVS Laxman            Ind Pak  Faisalabad   2005-06  2

3/242  Younis Khan/Mohammad Yousuf    Pak Ind  Faisalabad   2005-06  3

In two of those (in 1976 and 1993-94) there were three in succession.
Two other instances of three in succession not listed above are as
follows.

1/162  WM Woodfull/WH Ponsford        Aus Eng  Lords       1930     2
2/231  WM Woodfull/DG Bradman         Aus Eng  Lords       1930     2
3/192  DG Bradman/AF Kippax           Aus Eng  Lords       1930     2

2/170  SB Bangar/RS Dravid            Ind Eng  Leeds        2002     1
3/150  RS Dravid/SR Tendulkar         Ind Eng  Leeds        2002     1
4/249  SR Tendulkar/SC Ganguly        Ind Eng  Leeds        2002     1

Four in succession (spanning two different innings) is a record.

Aslam, a question on the stats: have you been maintaining your own
database of all the stats or do you have some privilege login account
for a database like statsguru?
