Australian Selectors?

Post by fanto » Sun, 25 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Does anyone else think Aust. need new selectors.  It does seem strange
that if you are not from NSW or VIC it is hard to make the Aust. side.
and if you do you better not muck up or you'll be dropped straight away
while other players can afford not to score runs all series yet still
remain in the side.   The player I most feel sorry for is Campbell from
WA, who is arguably the most exciting opening batsman in Aust. yet he
can't even make the Aust squad.  It must say something about the
selectors confidence in our shield batsman when they experiment with
different opening combinations and at times neither of the batsman are
natural opening batsman, which can be a specialized spot.  I don't
subscribe to the knee jerk reaction of dropping half the team, but we do
need to find a good team balance.

Aust. for the World Cup.

Well, funny how I heard many people say to me that players from NSW can
easily make the AUST side (probably true) but I am interested in knowing
how many selectors are actually from NSW??? Can anyone tell me?

Australian Selectors?

Maybe it's time for TWO selection panels.
The regulars for the Test side,
and a younger set of selectors, chosen at random from club cricket around
the country to choose the ODI side. This would ensure a fresh approach,
because, let's face it, it's freshness, not ability, experience, mental
toughness or nouse, that wins cricket games.

One.  Steve Bernard, NSW fast bowler from 1972/73 to 1978/79.

Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors (and, in my opinion, overdue for a
permanent vacation from that role), is a former Queensland leg-spin
all-rounder who played a few Tests for Australia in 1989.

The third member is Andrew Hilditch, former Australian opening batsman
intermittently between 1978/79 and 1985/86.  Although he started his
playing career with New South Wales, he played the majority of it for South
Australia.  He is the son-in-law of Bobby Simpson.
