Wheee - Asia v/s Rest. Sept 18th
http://www-usa.cricket.
org/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2001/AUG/278636_ENG_06AUG2001.html

The Asia Team :
Sachin Tendulkar (Capt)
Rahul Dravid
Harbhajan Singh
VVS Laxman
Sourav Ganguly
Anil Kumble
Javagal Srinath
Wasim Akram
Aamer Sohail
Moin Khan

Rest of the World Team :
Alec Stewart (Capt)
Adam Gilchrist
Jimmy Adams
Graham Thorpe
Courtney Walsh
Reon King
Andy Caddick

Opinion -
1) I'd drop Ganguly and pick Jayasuriya to open with Tendulkar. If both of
them got going, it'd be slaughter.

2) Why Srinath? Isn't Wakar Younis better?

3) Rest of the World - Surely McGrath should be in there. What are the
chances they'll play Fat Boy Warne?

I think the wives of Warne, McGrath and one other (SRW?) are all due babies
around that time so don't expect any of them to be there.

This is an invitational ODI game, not an official one. Otherwise you'll
not see anybody other than SRT, Gangs and Harby making it into
a ASIA XI team. I would say this is a good ASIA XI:

SRT
Jayasuriya
Jayawardene
Inzi
Arnold/Ganguly
Razzak
Moin/Latif
Murali
Harby
Wasim
Waqar

12th: Akthar

A Rest of the world team with not one player from the team rated 2nd in both
ODIs
and Tests? A bit of a farce if you ask me.

These Asia vs ROTW games are a complete waste of time. Players are only
there for the money.

And this makes them different from ODI nonsenses in Sharjah and
Toronto in what way?

I don't think Harbhajan would make it into an Asia XI. Saqlain would
be there in place of HS.

Ganguly would a certainty in any Asia XI or world XI or
whatever. I don't see how you can mark Ganguly as a
'/' option.

Akthar would probably make it ahead of Wasim in the
ODI team.

Ten players against seven hardly seems fair :)

You're assuming that everybody invited was anxious to play, but many
will have had other commitments or wanted a rest. I suspect that their
choice of Pakistan players, in particular, was restricted since won't
the series against Bangladesh either still be in progress or only just
over? Also most of the Australians probably decided that they'd rather
put their feet up following a long tour of England.

I was going by form only. So Gangs is doubtful making it in Asia XI on
present form. Also he is damningly inconsistent and predictable.
Everybody knows his flaws by now.

Yes Saqlain would make it ahead of Harby.

His present form is much better than Jayawardene. Both Ganguly &
Arnold
would make it. Jayawardene on present form shouldn't even make the SL
team.

What's new about his flaws that they didn't know 6 months back ?

Then what do you attribute to, his lack of match winning performances?
I don't think it is form, because poor form can't last this long.
He comes with occasional 50s, but otherwise he gets out usually in
single digits.
