Here is a list of instances when there was a gap of at least 30 in head-to-head Tests between two FIRST innings declarations. The sides without declarations are listed first. The Tests listed are exclusive (last and the next match in which the listed sides declared their first innings closed). There may or may not have been second innings declarations during the listed sequences.

98  Eng v WI  from 619-6d Nottingham    1957    to 566-9d Birmingham 2004
54  Eng v Aus from 351-7d Lords        1968    to 482-9d Manchester 1985
54  WI  v Aus from 468-8d Port-of-Spain 1983-84 to 449-9d Bridgetown 2011-12
36* Pak v WI  from 406-8d Karachi       1974    to current

Thanks.

Even more interesting question: When was the last time a captain
declared
an innings closed when still behind? (Other than the Cronje inspired
RSA v Eng test)

It would seem to have been 10th April, 2012. :) Or did you mean the last
time prior to that? I would think that it's not that unusual for a side
to declare with 8 or 9 wickets down and only a few runs behind,
especially when time to force a win is getting short.

Only 26 times in Tests.  Since 1 Jan 2000:

England 0/0 (deficit 248) v South Africa at Centurion 1999/2000
Zimbabwe 285/4 (deficit 89) v England at Nottingham 2000
Zimbabwe 340/6 (deficit 147) v NZ at Wellington 2000/01
NZ 287/8 (deficit 199) v Australia at Brisbane 2001/02
Bangladesh 169/9 (deficit 93) v NZ at Dhaka 2008/09
Australia 406/9 (deficit 43) v WI at Bridgetown 2012

That one is interesting and unexpected.  West Indies was the best team
in the world and had a formidable batting lineup throughout the 80s;
yet they batted their whole card in every Test against Australia
subsqeuent to the match cited.  Who'd have thunk it?
