All-time India Test XI

All-time India Test XI

Post by K Vijay Kuma » Tue, 24 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I tried to put together a list of 11 players who I thought would have
been part of an all-time best Test XI put up by India.

I have also attached their Test stats as part proof.
The listing follows suggested batting order. The bowling stats are in
suggested bowling order (of course some of them may not be called
upon to bowl, at all)

I hope my request for others to create similar lists for other Test

A very good team....If I were to choose one I would make the following
changes...

Vijay Merchent should open since that was the position where he played
his best knocks.  Also we already have a left arm spinner in Bedi.

With Merchant opening this spot can be taken by one of Vishwanath,
Vengsarkar or Azharuddin

I'm not too sure about Nissar since he did not play too many tests.  I
would put Ghavvri in instead.

Close call between Chandra and Subhash Gupte...would'nt know whom to
pick.

Vinoo Mankad is also a fairly regular opener. I went through several
Test score cards to prepare this list. I found that all five of Vinoo's
centuries are as opener. The two against New Zealand are double hundreds
at home, including his 413 run record partnership. More importantly,
the other three hundreds are scored in England against Trueman and
Statham, and two in Australia against Lindwall and Miller. (Miller
bowled very few overs in one of those innings)

I was inclined to include Nissar on his reputation alone, but decided
to check out his stats first. There are two columns here which are
remarkable and make his inclusion a must for me.

Mohd. Nissar    1211    34    707   25  5-90   28.28    3    -    48.4

His average of 28.28 is better than any of the other bowlers included
in the team. His strike rate is a phenomenal 48.4, which is a clear
2.5 overs better than Kapil who is the next closest. In just six matches
Nissar had three 5-wkt hauls. If Kapil had that kind of strike rate,
he would have had 65 5-wkt hauls!! Bowing to the fact that the weight
of Kapil's accumulated performance is greater proof, and Nissar's stats
might be a proverbial flash in the pan, I have Kapil bowling the first
over ahead of Nissar.
As to including Ghavri, there was once a tongue-in-cheek suggestion
from Busybee in the Sportsweek that once Bombay found a decent fast
bowler, even Bombay would drop him, let alone India. Half of Ghavri's
bowling was slow left-arm spin, and I wonder how many of his 109 wkts
are as a spinner.
Between Gupte and Chandra, what decided the issue for me was again,
Chandra has taken more wickets. Additionally, Chandra's strike rate was
a couple of overs less than Gupte's. As a test bowler, one looks for
wicket taking ability more than containment (Gupte's Avg. is only
slightly better than Chandra's)

SP Gupte             11284  608  4403 149  29.55  9-102 12  1  75.7
KD Ghavri             7036  233  3656 109  33.54  5-33   4  -  64.5

Subhash Gupte played 36 tests, and Ghavri 39.

The possible issue of debate could be whether we should have an
off-spinner instead of Bedi to balance out the team...close thing
Prasanna in 49 tests has the following figures
EAS Prasanna         14353  602  5742 189  30.38  8-76  10  2  75.9

possible candidate, certainly.

I am one of Azhar's greatest fans (I was delighted to actually meet
him on his Carib tour last month) but I must admit that I could not
find a place for him in this line-up.

Good team.  Comments:

Merchant was an opening batsman and I would partner Gavaskar with
Merchant.  Mankad, good allrounder as he was, is somewhat superfluous
with Bedi in the team.  So I would replace him with Mohinder Amarnath,
whose performance against pace is unquestioned and whose allround
capabilities better support Kapil and Nissar.  Azhar, Vishwanath and
Vengsarkar are also strong candidates and one of them should displace
Umrigar, stalwart of his times, but suspect against pace, whose fast off
breaks really did not merit him an allrounder spot.

Comparitive batting stats:

                 M     I   NO     R   HS    Avg.   100s   50s   Ct/St.
M H Mankad      44    72    5  2109  231    31.47    5     6     33
G R Vishwanath  91   155   10  6080  222    41.93   14    35     63
DB Vengsarkar  116   185   22  6868  166    42.13   17    35     78
PR Umrigar      59    94    8  3631  223    42.22   12    14     33
M Amarnath      69   113   10  4378  138    42.50   11    24     47
MA Azharuddin   83   120    6  5011  199    43.95   17    16     88

Indeed Mankad waged many a lonely battle against Hutton's team of 1952
and Bradman's Australians of 1947-48.  However, New Zealand was a very
weak team in Mankad's days.  Merchant was a brilliant batsman, but going
thru the records I find Mankad's scores more consistent.  So put Vinoo
back and we have the virtual spectacle of two left-armers (Bedi &
Manakd) wheeling away forever and Chandra providinf shock therapy.
