What you say may very well be true, but it's important to view things
in a wider context, otherwise we risk being too judgmental towards our
Indian friends. The fact is India is a very corrupt, poverty stricken
country. Cheating and lying is a way of life over there. It's a matter
of survival really, and it shouldn't be a surprise that this is also
reflected in the way the Indian national cricket team play their
sport. Their oppression of the Dalits makes South Africa's former
apartheid regime look benign by comparison. The oppressors, the so
called upper caste Indians are of course in big time denial of this
fact. Their attitude of contempt is well illustrated by the recent
'monkeygate' business. Despite what they may claim, racism towards
people of African descent is common place in India. African students
who come to India for higher education recount shocking stories of how
they are sneered at and called monkeys by strangers in the street, of
how landlords would refuse to rent out rooms to them, and how people
would avoid sitting next to them on public transport. Caste motivated
***,***s and other abuses are a daily occurrence in India. The
corrupt Indian police and justice system ensure that the vast majority
of these crimes go unpunished. I could sight specific instances of
especially disgusting and revolting crimes that have been committed
against Dalit peoples, but it would be inappropriate and undignified
to do so in this forum. Of course dignity and decency is not a concept
familiar to many of the upper caste Indian posters who frequent this
forum. Anyway, the point is that India is a poverty stricken, corrupt
and deeply divided country, and we should be careful not to judge them
by our own higher standards of morality.
