But he lost.No Aussie Captain, no matter how aggressive, eg Taylor,
would have given away a test match.

Go for the win - if it's on - but - never, never lose.

How'd that happen? Would it have made any difference - I mean after
that much rain would the pitch have taken spin anyway? Gutsy decision
anyway you look at it.

Aus v NZ in Hobart, 27.11-1.12 1997.
New Zealand could have won that.  Even when they were 5 wickets down
victory to NZ was still on.  Taylor set them a target which gave them
a real chance of winning.

Hansie didnt give this match away.  He saved it.  SAfrica very nearly
won.

Which leads to some very boring cricket.  If Cronje had set England
300 to win in 60 overs it would (probably) have been a boring draw IMO
what Cronje and Hussain did was good for the image of test cricket and
should be applauded.  Test cricket should be played at all times to
win (which the Aussies in particular are very good at) but that should
not include playing at all times to avoid losing.

The point is to go for a win you have to give the chasing side a chance
otherwise they'd just play for a draw, and Cronje knew that there were
no devils in the pitch and that he'd need England to take some chances
in order to win.  It very nearly worked, to have your frontline bowlers
bowling at your opponents bowlers in the last two overs with only two
wickets to fall is a great position, in that position you'd probably win
or draw better than half the time?

Phil.

When he was fielding, early on in the England innings.

It might have done. Most of the English batsmen, including Stewart and -
I think - Vaughan, do not play wrist-spin very well.

Indeed.
