ASIA vs REST should be awesome

Post by Dennis Roge » Tue, 04 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Is anyone looking forward to the Asia XI vs Rest of the World XI match as much
as I am? I cant wait for it, it should be a fantastic game of cricket. The only
thing I dont want is rain ... hope its clear as, so well get a good game.

Its going to be hard though for players from different teams to interact
together in a team like atmosphere ... like enemys may have to talk etc. and
the captain talk to almost every player. I would greatly appreciate other
peoples comments on the match.

May the best team win,
Dennis

I'm going to watch this programme on Sky tonight "Selecting the best" to see
exactly how they picked the teams. Some of the selections were odd but I guess
they had to go on availability/injuries etc.
I'm really looking forward to watching Lara (just because I always do) and
it'll be good to see Cairns play too.
All in all I'm really looking forward to it, but not as much as I'm looking
forward to the three ODIs next week :-)

Rachel.

I haven't seen the Asian team list or seen the selection programme for that yet
but the original rest of the world side was:

Gilchrist
M Waugh (vc)
Kallis
Lara (c)
Bevan
Klusener
Johnson
Cairns
Vettori
Caddick
Donald
Ambrose

Since the selection Vettori has pulled out with his back injury and been
replaced by Phil Tufnell. Ambrose pulled out and was replaced with Walsh and
Nantie Hayward was also brought in (possibly in replacement of Donald but I'm
not clear on that). I was a little surprised at Hayward coming in because
during the original selection Tony grieg suggested him and his suggestion was
squashed by the rest of the panel. Then they go and bring in another v. fast
bowler??? I guess they couldn't get Lee at such short notice.
I was a little surprised at the omission of Shaun Pollock from the squad.
Sunil Gavaskar did say that he was still a little suspicious of his batting,
which is fair enough, but IMHO he would be a great asset to any side as a
bowler alone. Then again, they have such a fantastic bunch of players to choose
from, and somebody had to be left out.

I can't wait for the game it should be great, this is how I see the teams and for
the World XI it's easy to pick the 12th man IMO:-)

This is how I see it;

Teams

The Greats

Sanath Jayasuriya            Mark Waugh
Saurav Ganguly                Michael Bevan
Sachin Tendulkar             Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram                  Jacques Kallis
Anil Kumble                     Courtney Walsh
Muttiah Muralitharan

The 70/30's

Aravinda De Silva            Neil Johnson
Ajay Jadeja                       Chris Cairns
Abdul Razzaq                    Nantie Hayward
Chaminda Vaas                  Lance Klusener

The 50/50's

Robin Singh                     Andy Flower
Moin Khan                       Andy Caddick

The shit:-)

                                        Phil Tufnell

What do you think?

Not to put too much of a dampener on things, but if this game is anything
like the Princess Di
Memorial match we saw two years ago, it is likely to be an utter farce.
Opposition bowlers
grinning at batsmen after bowling bouncers, opposition batsmen looking
surprised when the
bowlers actually bowled *good* balls at them...and so on and so forth.

Rather than have a one-off OD, they could have injected some competitiveness
into the
whole thing by having a best of 3 or even best of 5 series. At least that
way players wouldn't
be consigned to thinking that this was yet another day where they could just
go out there
and have their jollies at the expense of the spectators and everyone else.

Cheers,

Harish

Fantastic line ups. May the best team win. The only changes I would like to
see is Aravinda de Silva bat ahead of Ajay Jadeja and Andy Flower bat ahead
of Lance Klusener.

Cheers. Phil

On current Form Chris Cairns should bat at 5 or 6.

Being in the subcontinent, I'd say Phil Tufnell will get a game at the
expense of someone like Gilchrist (needs a rest - going to rsa) or Caddick
(replace an englishman with an englishman)
oh and BTW Courtney Walsh isnt playing cause of injury, Franklin Rose has
been inlcuded in the ROW XII.

What?! When did he pull out? I guess it must have been after Sunday because he
was still in then. Anyway, Walsh (Amby's replacement) has now pulled out with a
finger injury and has been replaced by Franklyn Rose.

WIth any luck at all Franklyn will also go down with
a mysterious "injury" before getting on the flight.
If the organizers want a WI player in the ROTW team,
they can go get Hooper, or maybe coax Phil Simmons
out of retirement. The WI do not need one of their
fast bowlers sitting on a plane for 20 hours with an
important series against Pakistan coming up.

Ideally these games should be a showcase of world
cricket.................but with the top players pulling out left, right and
centre, it is rapidly falling into the category of just another exhibition
game.

Unfortunate...............but that's the way of the world
