It is victory of truth, says Harbhajan's mother

CHANDIGARH, January 29: It was celebration time at Harbhajan's Singh's
house in Jalandhar on Tuesday, with his mother terming the dropping of
racial abuse charges against her son as the "victory of truth".

"I am very happy today. It is the victory of truth," Avtar Kaur said
in Jalandhar.

"I was anxious before the verdict came, but now I am more at peace,"
Kaur, who was struggling to hold back her tears, said.

She said the family would go to a nearby gurudwara to pay obeisance
and thank the almighty.

"I knew God was with us and I had full faith that my son would come
out clean," she said.

Kaur said Harbhajan would be calling her later in the day and she
would wish him and the team good luck for the forthcoming ODI series.

"The unity shown by the team, who rallied behind Harbhajan, is highly
commendable. The board, too, fully backed him up and the support he
got from everyone, including people of this country and the media,
gave him strength," she said.

Kaur, who said she did not care much about minor penalty imposed on
Harbhajan, also felt the verdict would give a "new strength" to the
whole team, which would help them put even better performance in the
upcoming triangular series.

Well-wishers and Harbhajan's fans thronged his house with boxes of
sweets and planned to celebrate in the evening.

"We are planning a party in the evening and everybody will perform
bhangra," a relative of the cricketer said.

Twist and turn, its in soil perchance.
The article nowhere makes that inference but its in your head.

Knowing Sikhs, his mother will possibily give him such a dressing for
those words he might be forced to ring Symonds' mom and apologise.

> Interesting, I thought that Monkey wasn't a problem in India.

It isn't. There's nothing in the article that suggests otherwise.
They're celebrating the fact that a racial abuse charge was dropped.
I'm sure they don't consider the charge to be justified in the first
place, because they don't consider calling someone a monkey an offense
in the first place, not that there's evidence it even happened.

Many others have already pointed out the irony. The irony is that the
reason behind their celebration is the fact that Harbhajan "only" let
out a volley of abuse that might've gotten him a punch in the face in
his own hometown. The reason his mother is celebrating because he
"only" got punished for saying something terribly misogynistic.

This is what happens when the justice system fails. A storm in a
teacup leads to trumped up charges, and a Salem witch trial occurs. A
bunch of relatively harmless acts are "proven" with hardly any
credible evidence in front of under-qualified judges, and punished
with all the might of the law. Everyone is so enthralled in it, that a
truly condemnable act becomes trivial. The whole saga has proven
Procter's initial hearing to be what I initially said it was - a Salem
witch trial.

-Samarth [ then again, this is the sort of abuse we're told Aussies
use to address their clients, so maybe it's perfectly acceptable after
all ].
