South African captain caught cheating !!!!!!!

South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje is expected to come under fire
tomorrow for what looks like a ball-tampering incident during the opening
game of the triangular one-day series with Australia 12 days ago.
In television footage of the game, Cronje can been seen dropping the ball to
the ground and rolling it under the spikes of his cricket shoe.

Agreed. Saw it on TV this evening. This was as blatant as you can get. The
sort of thing we have all tried in lower grade Cricket, but to try it on in
an Innternational !!! Thought Hansie had a few more clues than that.
Perhaps the Aussies will disqualify the Boks and allow the Kiwis to make
the finals.
Mike Atherton will be having a chuckle at this one.

I thought the Atherton incident was much worse and like Steve Waugh I
think Cronje should be given the benefit of the doubt.  The only curious
thing was his initial response at Launceston.  In the same breath he at
first denied standing on the ball and then said he didn't do any damage to
it.  Still, generally it's no big deal.

Well, nobody, even a club cricketer would "play" with the
ball like that.  Hansie was supposed to give the ball to
the umpire when the play was stopped.  Well, he polished
the ball first, had a good look at it and dropped it.  He
looked at it once and gave a little push before putting
his boot on it.  A cynic would say that Hansie wanted to
have the chosen side up before stepping on it.

Hansie was not supposed to do what he did and the reason
or excuse looks lame.  But, making "big deal" out of it
and trying to say that "this is how South Africans win"
would be stupid, in my opinion.

Let's play ball.

You guys are ***ing on.
You DON'T KNOW whether he was cheating.
What you do know is he had his boot on the ball.
This was a silly act by Cronje, but that appears to be all it was.
His mind seemed to be on the crowd disturbance at the time and was just
mindlessly fiddling around with the ball.
Silly yes, but cheating NO!!!

Cronje actions in past during games would give no reason to assume he was
intentionally trying to gain an advantage by messing up the ball

The person who rate the original subject line above is just a trouble
maker

I have the atmost respect and admiration for Hansie Cronje. I do not
think the actions as reported could be construed as intentionally
roughing up the ball.

Were there any comments frop the umpires, or match referee ?? or
opposing captain ?? regading the state of the ball ????

This seems to me to be the typical Aussie response to being beaten - The
opposition are all cheats.

Why can't you bunch just take a good thrashing like men ????

Cronje does not need to cheat - The Aussies are incapable of scoring more
than 133 anyway, even if they had used a beachball, fat Warnie would still
be bowled by Cullinan.

Er, Steve Waugh said there was nothing in it. So, I can't understand why
you have gone off like this. Unless you have a deeply ingrained hatred
of Australians....
from the thrashing we gave you in RSA earlier this year :-P.

Unfortunately, Ben, you're probably right.

Quote:

>Cronje looked at the ball shined one side of up, dropped onto the ground,

>turf... ball tampering clear and cut...

Well... what was his motivation for doing it? If he did it to discolor
or scuff the ball then, yes, it was cheating. From what I could see on
TV Cronje - who was not wearing spikes - rested the toe of his foot
lightly on the ball, he didn't tread it into the ground.

Cronje has said that he can't remember the incident - which occured
during the crowd disturbances in the first ODI - and that he was
preoccupied with the question of whether or not he should take his
team off the field. On being shown the footage he acknowledged, as he
had to, that he had placed his foot upon the ball but denied that he
had been trying to discolor it. He also pointed out that the charge in
the press was made *12 days* after the event, and that no complaints
had been made by any Australian player, by the Australian management,
by the match referee or the umpires. He added that umpires now inspect
the ball at regular intervals and that it would be very hard to tamper
the ball and get away with it.

Steve Waugh has played the incident down. Johannesburg's top daily
newspaper The Star quotes him as saying "He (Cronje) is a great
fellow. He plays it tough and he plays it fair so I'm willing to give
him the benefit of the doubt."

There was, in fact, an enquiry by Terry Prue to Cronje, but it did not
concern this incident. Prue was concerned about the SA fielders
pitching the ball on the ground whilst passing it back to the bowler.
Cronje replied that this was the way in which SA passed the ball
amongst each other. "Sometimes we do it for fun, sometimes you do that
to get the ball a little rough on one side."

That's a remarkably frank admission by Cronje, given that that act
comed close to contravening the spirit if not the letter of Law 42.5.

If 42.5 is contravened then the umpires are to change the ball. Was
the ball changed during this match?

Saw the incident on TV tonight in SA on the news
All he did was lean on the ball. This is being blown
out of all proportions. He did not roll the ball at all
as described above.
