The FACTS: NZ vs INDIA (in India!)

Post by Vibhore Ana » Fri, 29 Sep 1995 04:00:00

New Zealand have only won two tests in India out of a total of 18 tests.
The last time a New Zealander scored a century against India in India was on 1976-77 tour.
Guess who it was - Glenn Turner.

Why are the Indians having doubts about their team?  We have a strong ODI side, and play
admirably at home.  Some of the recent victories have been well deserved.  Tendulkar, Jadeja,
Kambli, Sidhu and ofcourse Azhar showed fine form last season, and will have a lot to live up
to this time.  India will definately do extremely well against NZ.

This is an interesting comment by Gavaskar I read in India Today:

India will definately have a new captain after the World Cup.  If India wins the World Cup,
Azhar will want to quit as a winner.  If India don't win the World Cup, India will have a new
captain anyways.  Comments?

Overconfidence will be the Indian weakness. Sure they have a tendency top beat other teams on
their home soil, but complacency leads to weakness. Obviously NZ have won games in India
before and theres no reason why It cant be done again. By the way, Guess who is  coming
back to India - Glenn Turner.

Definately? NZ will be underdogs sure, but if NZ have got the guts and the determination,
theres no reason why NZ cant come out  without being embarassed. I dont think NZ will win the
series, but I also dont think that they'll be whitewashed 3-0.

Lets see NZ play as if they wanted to win for a change!!
GO NEW ZEALAND!!

And they've only made one tour to India since 1976-77 (three tests in
1988-89).  A tour which NZ's best batsman missed through
injury/illness.

You've got to admit, at thos point NZ doesn't have a hell of a lot to
lose against India.  Let's see: we have a new coach, a new captain, an
exrtemely inexperienced spin attack, a reworked batting order, our
ump***th new opening partnership in last four years, and a pace
attack that hasn't stayed healty enough to play more than one test
together.

India has:  An amazingly talented batting line up,  a cunning and
relentless squad of spinners, beyond zealous home fans, and the aura
of invincibility that Indian teams bask in at home.

... because you can imagine the repercussions if they don't!
(Pakistan as case in point).

Quite possible ... though IMHO Azhar still can continue for some time after the
WC. Mebbe Gavaskar is referring to a situation like 1987 when Kapil had to
quit after we lost ...

About 40 minutes altogether (before Deon Nash broke his finger).
