My understanding of the ABC report was that it didn't
necessarily implicate Azhar as the recipient, but rather drew
two seperate conclussions:

a) that an unspecified Indian player had declared $50m during
the tax amnesty (as reported by the tax official being
interviewed).
b) Azhar is one of the Indian players most frequently cited in
match fixing allegations.

I don't think it actually suggested that Azhar was the guy that
had declared the $50m, OR, that if he *was* the one, that he had
earned it through match fixing.

Of course, I only read the transcripts, which were apparently
edited for legal reasons.

I think you're right Nick. Can't recall Azza being named as the
$50m man.

Knew I should have taped it. Does the ABC still repeat 4 Corners
on the w/e? If so, check it out.

We taped it.

They definitely name Azhar.

"It has since been shown that (I forget his name)'s 50 million
dollar man is Azhar.."

misquote, but that is the gist of what was said

Curious... the Four Corners website acknowledges that the
transcript contains minor editing for legal reasons... I guess
that was the edited bit!

Errmmm... I wasn't jumping to Azhar's defence.  I was jumping to
Four Corner's defence.  I thought that they had, perhaps, been
incorrectly quoted.  As it turns out, they DID name Azhar.  And
frankly, if he *has* been match fixing, I'm quite happy to see
the bastard fry in hell.

Having said that... perhaps some Indian posters can explain to
me exactly why he is hated so much?  No flame wars or
diatribe... just a simple explanation.  Is it the match fixing
accusations, his erratic performances, his personal life, his
personality... what?

I find this really amazing.  While most Indian RSCers
lose no opportunity to bash Azharuddin, most of the
non-Indian "tribe" jump to his defence.  The previous
two responses in this thread reinforce this feeling.
Azhar may or may not have fixed matches, but he has
surely "fixed" most of these cricket lovers from other
      countries !

well I'm not jumping to Azhars defence either, but I just thought I'd
post a quote here:

'I'm sure he didn't do it because there is no EVIDENCE against
him.  I believe the phrase is "innocent till proven guilty".
Familiar with it?'

Good to see consistency all around, as usual

Not quite. We were "defending" the ABC, not Azza. Mistakenly as
Doggie points out in another post. (She loves it when I'm wrong.
Cow).
My question on Azza is; If he's always been wealthy then why did
he bother playing all that county cricket? And if he wasn't rich
when he was playing county then....

You've certainly got a barrow to push haven't you, Paul.  While I'm well
aware of the short-comings of Australian cricket, I think you've pushed it
a little too hard this time.  "Innocent until proven guilty" *is*
consistant with the approach taken above when you consider:

1) Four Corners' transcripts contain no detail of Azhar as the named man
while the original report did.

2) Four Corners' sources for naming Azhar were reliable and checked.

3) No one in the quoted text above has actually accused Azhar of anything
other than being the international Indian cricketer who declared $50mill
in their tax amnesty income.

There is the word "if" in there.

You are, once again, confusing every other Australian with the likes of
Paddy, O'Neill and several people named Colin.

Yup.
Note also the term 'the bastard'.
Notice anything about that?

Not at all.
I'm  not too aware of the people above (though a lot of you here were in
agreement with Colin when he called Warne & Waugh 'heroes'), but I'm not
pasting everyone with the same brush.
Just those that are all too eager to blame 'foreigners' but bleat that there
is no EVIDENCE (not my capitals) against dinky di Aussies.
