What is Harsha Bogle's Background?

Hi,

I have been enjoying Harsha's commentary very much in the past few Aus vs
India series, and was wondering if he has any background as a player?

Can't seem to find him on cricinfo.

If not, what is his background?

Cheers,

DK

I don't know his background but you gotta love that accent.  He's been
taking a bit of unfair ribbing from the Australian commentators this season.

His background is that of a fan, pretty much :-) Not a player - dont
think he played beyond school level, if I rememeber correctly.

He's from Hyderabad originally (was a acquaintance/friend of Azhar from
half a dozen years before Azhar made his test debut). Went to IIM-
Ahmedabad for university (one of India's top MBA programs). Then moved
to Bombay and started writing for some newspapers, and then a little
commentary.

His first real commentating opportunity came in Australia, in 1992,
when the ABC was looking for an Indian to be part of their team for the
Australia-India 5 test series. Nobody knew much about him then, so he
was apparently only offered a 1-test contract by the ABC (they would
probably have dropped him immediately after the test if he turned out
to be terrible :-) They ended up liking him enough to not just keep him
for the entire series and the B&H ODIs following, but even invited him
back 2 months later for the World Cup held in Australia.

He's been a big name in Indian commentating circles ever since. Often
does TV commentary (though his current job is to be summarizer during
intervals and the end of the day for Indian TV, and actually commentate
only on the radio for ABC).

Wonder what you though of his assessment after the Adelaide test when he
said Azza's had a good series with the bat and very good series as a
captain.

I disagree.............I thought there was a good nature banter between
the commentators. I enjoyed his comments and he is by far, a superior
commentator then Sunny G.

A couple of additions;

He compered a sports quiz on DD, Mumbai in 1990 which sort of brought
him into the limelight. He was def a rung above the Milind Wagle's and
Fredun De Vitre's that we used to be lumped with. He was in Osmania
Univ for his undergrad unless I'm very much mistaken. Has written a bio
of Azhar - one of the best (Indian) cricket bio's ever written.

He also does a programme called 'Inside Cricket' which is really good.
He is also the only *non* sportsperson from India to be signed up Mark
McCormak's Professional Management Group.

I don't like Bhogle. I think he talks too much. Pataudi's
the only desi commentator I have liked.

spot on. if i'm right he worked for Rediffusion too. which
probably explains why/how he's been a near permanent at www.rediff.com

i think he does a pretty good job as a summarizer (obviously not
in the benaud class) and his commentary is quite interesting too.
i do think his voice tends to become too monotonous sometimes
and repeats himself too often in the chats with sunny.

I enjoy HB's commentary and sense of humour. Being from a non
cricketing background his understanding and apt descriptions are really
a pleasure
to listen to.

He is 39 years old... I read last yr he was 38. And has a 10 or 11 yr
old son. Had the oppurtunity to talk to him in 1998 in Toronto. He does
not drink ***, but likes that peculiarly Indian stuff Fresh Lime
soda.

I must say I also rather liked the fresh lime sodas when I was in India and
the beers weren't bad either.
I very much enjoy Harsha's commentary. It does show you don't need to be an
ex Test captain to be a good commentator. It is just a pity we will have to
wait several years again in Australia to hear it again.

One of the hallmarks is that Harsha seems to improve.  He was an
excellent TV commentator, and when doing the Tests for ABC,
he seemed to think that on radio, he had to keep talking on and on.
And certainly in the first Test, he was guilty of being repetetive
and monotonous.

However, I felt that by the third Test he had made tremendous
strides, and was focussing on analysis and doing an excellent
job -- it was almost as if he had gone back, heard the tapes
of himself, evaluated himself critically as a fan, and worked
to improve himself.  No idea if that was what he did, but the
Test-to-Test improvement appeared marked.

(No idea about the ODI's as I don't bother to log in to hear that
commentary, if indeed it is being given.)
