Indian Batting Line-up Pak 82-83 series

The Pak 82-83 tour was one of the most traumatising defeats but it
also usehered in an era where India went to win Major  ODI tournaments
for the next 2 years .

I remember then when the team was anounced ( 7pm Khel Samachar All
India Radio) for the tour I felt the same what most people are feeling
now that we have a great batting line up .

The batting line 1982-83 - up of still looks  good at least on paper
Gavaskar
Arun Lal ( Was replaced by Shastri / Srikant the last 2 matches)
Mohinder
Vishwanath
Vengsarkar
Sandeep Patil
Kapil
Kirmani
Madanlal
Sandhu/ Shastri

We had Six good Batsmen ( except for may be Arun Lal,   even arun lal
still had much better technique than many opners we tried recently)
and followed by genuine allrounder Kapil , good batting skills in
Kirmani , Madan lal , Sandhu and Shastri.  However it did nont do
India any good against Imran at his peak , I Still remember that
afternoon over 20 years ago when Imran ran through Indian batting line
taking 5 or 6 wickets in one session. Also one more thing simillar
with present was the weak Indian bowling apart from Kapil we had
essentially had nobody . If Pakistan bowlers bowl anywere near what
Imran did we are in for a tough time.
What we need as we needed then which is good bowling to counter attack
if we suffer a collaspe. I don't think  Pak batting is weak they
recently chased fourth innings 250+ target in NZ quite easily. I would
put Pak favourite for this series at 65-35.

Just out of curiosity, Rahul, would you consider it an achievement if India
manage to draw the Test series? I don't care a damn about the ODI's.
Pakistan always have an edge over India in ODI's, except for the World Cup.
But just assume that India manage a 1-1 result in the Test series, who do you
think can claim the m***victory? Tough question, isn't it??

Leave aside m***victories, a 1-1 result would mean that India finally won
a test match in Pakistan.  Given that the top Indian bowlers are not exactly
fit, it should be considered as a more than satisfactory result over a team
that is ranked ahead of the Indians.

It'll be tough to win one, though

I too don't care much about odos however unlike  you I believe India
has a better chance in odos than in tests . I would not be surpirsed
if India wins the odo series. PCB in order rake in money would  make
300+ flat tracks for the ODOs the experinced Indian batting would have
an advantage over pakistan under these conditions . As mentioned in
one of my earlier post if Pak have any brains they should not play
Shoaib in the ODOs and save him for the test.
Especially for India wining a test ( home or away) is a greta
achivement . Last year at home we were not able to beat NZ  ,a year
before we could not dominate and  I think won just 1 test against Lara
less WI . A year before that after wining the first test Eng dominated
the next 2 tests . We also almost lost test series to Zim at home few
years ago.

So yes  if India wins a test match it would be a great achievment
almost as good as beating Aus. But To do that we need a  good bowling
attack right now we just have one proven ( bellow 30 avg)  good bowler
Kumble even his fitness is not cleared .

I believe the rsc FAQs forbid one to claim that England played any good
cricket in that series.  Go and wash your mouth out with soap and water.

A few factual corrections:

Quote:

2 wins and 1 draw at home against Lara-less WI.  1 win, 2 losses and 2 draws
against Lara-ful WI away.

Quote:
> A year before that after wining the first test Eng dominated
> the next 2 tests .

1-0 at home and 1-1 away, both Lara-less but Fletcher-ful.

Quote:
> We also almost lost test series to Zim at home few
> years ago.

Won Test series against Zim at home 2-0, and drew away 1-1, both without
Duncan Fletcher.
