Australian umpires calling Murali was 'mischievous' says Titmus

By Reggie Fernando our London correspondent

The man who mesmerises all those men that come before him - Mutthiah
Muralitharan - was unofficially
given the green light to carry on with his bowling when former England spinner
Fred Titmus said last
week that the decision of the Australian umpires to call Muralitharan last
winter was 'mischievous'.

Titmus has been appointed as cricket's 'first watchdog' for checking the
legitimacy of suspect bowling
actions.

With the cricket World cup round the corner and the rage over allegations that
Muralitharan has a
suspect action the International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked Titmus to
identify 'chuckers'.

Titmus, now almost 66 and rated as the second best off-spinner England has
produced behind that
legend Jim Laker, has already put a number of bowlers from various cricket
playing nations to the test
at the indoor nets at Lord's.

He also said that Murali who joins Lancashire soon after the World Cup has not
had tests yet at Lord's.

This is a fabulous article! It sez Titmus (and what is his official role?) has
'cleared' Merrilythrowin'emdown but then concludes with "...has not had tests
yet at Lord's." I'd say the standard of SL's journalists is in step with that
of its cricketers.

I have a dream. That the ICC use camera's in actual matches so they
can see the questionable bowler in a live test or odi match.

All a suspect bowler has to do is bowl legal in the nets and then
go back to chucking in tests or odi's.

Please test him in tests or odi matches.

Murali only throws about 1 ball every 3 overs, to my eyes. Therefore, a
'test' in the nets will always be likely to clear him. Umpires are supposed
to pick the throw, but have only 2 eyes.  I cannot think of a solution.
Cameras?  3D imaging? 10 umpires?

Oh well, it MUST be the case then - NOT. I woudl prefer to believe the
senior umpires who have come out in support of the umpires.

But, under the current setup, he still cannot categorically clear the
action. All he can do is comment on the balls that have been bowled in front
of him.

What they really should do is change the law, so that once somebody is
cleared, it is taken out of the umpires hands. THAT would be better rather
than this half-assed approach they are taking.

Surely not. If a player is cleared and then not allowed to be called
for chucking by an umpire again, then this gives that player free
reign to chuck at will in the future. The right of an umpire to call a
player for chucking must remain. Its the methods of investigation that
must improve.

Craig.

Well, after working in Colombo and reading the articles on cricket in their
main newspaper, I wouldn't put any credence whatsoever on anything any of
their journalists had to say.

You are right. He can and will bowl for quite a while without the
suspect action and then every now and again (IMO) "chuck" one.
Impossible to vet his bowling in the nets. you can onlt do it over a
period of time, sat a whole match. But therein lies the problem. He may
only be suspect on a half dozen deliveries in an innings, but they are
suspect nevertheless. Should an umpire then not call him because it's
only occasional? I don't think so.
The umpire then follows the laws of cricket and calls him, only to be
hounded to hell and back for doing so!
It is positively useless to set up a session before inspectors, it's
like calling for a tax audit _before_ you've done your tax return! -
won't catch anyone.

Careful, they will accuse you of being a racist - they can say what they
like about us, but the minute we say something against them, up go the
racist claims!

Please don't call them journalists - fuels the delusions of grandeur.
