I've heard rumors connecting Bobby Simpson with the Indian cricket team,
could anyone shed any more light on this

Thanks

As I understand it the Indian cricket board announced that Bob
Simpson had been appointed to be a technical advisor to the team.
However, when he was contacted he knew nothing of the appointment
as the board had never in fact asked him.

Well, it seems that he has been appointed advisor, and is in India presently
having discussions about the nature of his employment. He will not however be
there for the series against Australia for reasons of 'loyalty'. To read more,
check out the cricket section of rediff ( http://www.rediff.com )

He's the manager I think.

On ABC radio he said it wasn't a permanent position, more advisory and
part time.  I expect he'll assist in developing training skills, and
assist in coaching and analysis of the Australian players.  If he
takes up the job.  He has a very good cricket brain does Simmo.

I have it on good authority that he will not take up any position
until after the Aus tour for 'loyalty' reasons.  The news report
reckoned that India have not won a test match in the last
13, and lost 29 out of 39 of their recent odi's.  I hadn't realised
just how bad they are at the moment.

I may have misheard them, I was falling asleep at around 3am last night
with world service sports report on and too much lager swilling around
my system.

I hope that your team improves against Aus.  It's a shame when any test
side gets into a run of form like this. (Except when they're playing
England ;->)

Regards.

in Simpson's case this makes sense as he is still a paid employee of
the ACB!!

He won't be involved in any analysis of Australian players, at least not
yet, because he will not be consultant for the India-Australia series.

Things are very very bad : remember that Anwar got the highest score
against us as well last year, and Jayasuriya & co. demolished too many test
records to recount when they scored that massive 900+ .

Though I think the 29 loss out of 39 is unlikely  :

We've won 10 of our last 20 matches. And 2 were no results. So we lost 8 of
the last 20.
To lose 29 out of 30, we would have to lose 21 matches out of 19.

Unless of course, only completed matches are taken into consideration:

Then, 10 wins in 18 matches = 8 losses out of 18.
To lose 29 out of 39 , 21 matches in 21, which while possible, is wrong as
well.

So Either I am bad at counting, or you may have misheard them, or they may
even have got the facts wrong.

But one thing stands : Times are very bad indeed ( Though we have been
doing well against Pakistan , which is always something to be thankful for
)

ms

ps : let's just do the tests as well :

13 tests

last 5 against Sri Lanka : all draws ; one high probability of victory,
rain and light intervened.

8 tests

5 tests in West Indies : 4 draws; the fifth , we make 81 all out chasing
120 to win!

3 Tests

3 test in South Africa, 2 losses, one a real thrashing, the second a
thrashing, but less humiliating, while the third test match, well , the way
I remember it would probably have half the people here abusing me, so let's
not talk of  it.

Though the fact is, 13 matches without a win is true, but the losses were
only 3.

However , the weakness of the bowling is there for all to see, after all,
13 matches without a win ain't a joke, it's a nightmare.

Yep. But now if they said "theyve won more than half of their last 18 ODIs, and
lost only 1 off their last 10 tests" - that wouldnt sound quite as bad, would
it? :-) Given that Australia has won less than half of its last 18 ODIs, I
would think?

Simpson will be doing his "technical advising" only after
the Australian tour.  According to Sports Tonight (Channel
10), Simpson's input will be used first against the Sri
Lankans.

By the way, what is this "loyalty" thing?  This is a
professional sport and there is no such thing called
loyalty or gentlemanly conduct.  David Whartmore did
an excellent job and nobody called him a traitor. In
the international cricket we have  Woolmer and Rixon
at the moment, directing *their* teams against their
country as well.
