Why not a Wales national cricket team?

Post by Mr N » Tue, 07 Aug 2001 21:09:06

Hi folks,

I'm not a massive cricket fan, I have to say, although I have always
liked playing the game.  But for a long time I've wondered why Wales
doesn't have its own cricket team.  Does anyone have the answer?

I had assumed that it was because we are very bad at playing cricket
(amongst other things!) but I'm sure we'd beat Ireland and Scotland,
for example, yet they do have national sides.  Would Welsh people not
prefer a Welsh cricket team to cheer on or at least a British cricket
team?  I'm not a nationalist but supporting an England team does not
hold much sway with me (neither does supporting the Irish, e.g.).  If
the team was the British cricket team, though, I'd have no problems.

I'd be interested to hear your views.

Mark Roberts.

Have Glamorgan folded up or something?

The point is, that Glamorgan entered the County Championship many years
ago (one of the Poms will tell us exactly when) and, like all things
Welsh except Rugby, their players and ambitions became part of England.

Errr... football? Athletics? Tell Colin Jackson that his Commonwealth
Games medals were won running for England and I don't think he'd be
too impressed.

I have to admit, it's something i've wondered as well. I'm told the occasional
English player is Welsh (Dominic Cork is one that comes to mind, but I might be
wrong on that), so I would think that while a Wales national side would hardly
set the world on fire, they would be competitive with the lower echelon test
sides like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. And England. :-)

I suppose it would probably reduce England's depth (if that's not a
contradiction in terms), but then again, the side is called England, not
England & Wales. Or more appropriately, Great Britain.

It does. They won against Somerset Board and Norfolk in the first and
second rounds of the C&G trophy this year, and lost to Leicestershire
in the third round.

Colin Jackson has enjoyed a long and distinguished career but I find it
unlikely he was pulling on the red vest in 1921.

Actually, ECB stands for England and Wales Cricket Board.  Believe it
or not.

It'd be a jolly good wheeze to give Wales their own team! Then we
could all look forward to a Test match at
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.

Isn't Wales a principality of England and not a country legally?

Actually this isn't the case.  Wales does have its own national team
in most sports.  About the only exception I can think of is the
Olympics.  And here this is the British team, not England.  (Actually,
shouldn't it be the UK Olympics Squad?).  From reading the posts I
think I now know WHY there isn't a Wales national cricket team (not
including the one in the Minor Counties League or whatever it is), but
wouldn't Welsh people LIKE a Welsh national cricket team?  I know that
I'd certainly take more interest in cricket if there was one, and so
would many other welsh people I believe.  Any Welsh people here have
any views?  OK, so we probably wouldn't do very well against the 'big
boys' but that's not the point of having a national side, is it?

Cheers,

Mark Roberts.

There is also an annual Triple Crown tournament featuring Wales, Scotland,
Ireland and ECB England. For more details see:

The wonderful story I heard was about the English Team from a few years back being
asked to write a short essay about why it was important to be playing for England.
Robert Croft wrote his in Welsh Gaelic.

So is that a full strength Wales national team or merely a bunch of
Welsh amateurs getting together for a bash? I know the Scottish team in the C&G
does not contain players that play in the county system, despite being
Scottish.
Just out of interest, how many Welshmen are there playing County cricket? And
how many for Glamorgan? Surely they wouldn't have started a team there if there
wasn't the talent to fill it. I thought only the US do that with baseball
teams in Canada.
