If, as it appears from the current state of the Lord's Test, England lose their #1 Ranking, would it mean they have held the record for half the period that India did?  I am only going by what I saw in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICC_Test_Championship#Historical_rankings  Wikipedia, btw, is getting much better as a reliable source than it used to be, though I am not sure how accurate they are on this subject.
