pain in my left hand

Post by Lenn » Thu, 23 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I've been practice swinging  in the backyard a lot lately.  I have a
painful, hard, small pepple like "thing" in my hand.  It' directly
beneath my middle finger on my palm about a half inch from where the
finger meets the palm.

Anybody what this is?

Call me nutty, but don't you think seeing a doctor would be wiser than
asking the people in RSG?

Go and see a Doctor. Its probably not serious, I have a musician
friend that gets these regularly. Can't remember what they are
called.

Go see a doc.

It could be a simple blister or a developing callous. Or it could be a
ganglion cyst ( had one surgically removed that I developed through
too much mousing )- this is a very hard lump filled with liquid, and
if you move the lump, it hurts. Mine was about the size of a golfball.
It could be an RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury). The bottom line is, you
are in pain, you are confused, and only a real member of the medical
profession can tell you authoritatively what you have, give you a
cure, and tell you how it will affect your game.

Maybe it really IS a pepple!

:-)

Very sorry.  Really.  Please ignore me, I think I'm funny.

A physician, uncomfortable with posting to newsgroups, sent me the
following information and suggested I post it.  I do not know this
person but agreed to post it:

It sounds like you have developed a Dupuytren's Contracture.  This is
a nodular thickening and contracture of the fascia in your hand.  This
thickening can ultimately cause a flexion contracture deformity in
your finger.  No one knows why it occurs but repetitive microtrauma
may play a role.  Usually it just spontaneously appears.  Treatment
options include local corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, and
surgery.  I suggest that you see a good hand surgeon (either plastic
or orthopedic) for an opinion and treatment.  I am a podiatrist very
familiar with this problem as similar nodules occur in the foot in the
plantar fascia.  Good luck.
