Crowds? What crowds?

The Buick Open looks like a Euro Tour event for the crowd support. No
big crowds following Woods this time. Maybe they will have some good
commercials that will draw a few people to watch the television
broadcast (you can't watch it if you are interested in golf! I have it
on with no sound. It's a good thing that Harley Earl..whoever he
was...is dead, if he weren't, there would be at least thousands seeking
his life!).

On another note, the senior tour broadcast was really good, IMHO, and
what a great job Laidlaw and Brown did with that horrible feed they got
from Aussie CH 7 for the Johnnie Walker. I see Aussie broadcasters have
not only learnt their lessons well from their US counterparts, but have
exceeded them greatly. The preamble to the broadcast was so annoying it
gave me a headache! Showing the montage of past winners twice was a real
work of inanity. I'm sure they will be up for an award for that one!

God, I hate that crap. We *have* learnt it well from you ... I think
Channel 7 has been watching far too many US Masters telecasts.

I think I hate the voice-over person's actual *voice* the most. They
used him for the tribute to Roger Mackay and the segment on the history
on Lake Karrinyup. I don't know who it is, but it's so soppy it makes me
want to throw up. He sounds like something from around 1910. Underneath
it's quite interesting stuff, but just totally over the top for
sentimentalism and it smothers any feeling of real meaning.

Aside from that, the real golf coverage was pretty good, save for the
ever-annoying Sandy Roberts. Good camera angles, clear picture, good
ball flight tracking and covered *lots* of player's shots. Portrayed the
course well.

Maybe fans taped their doors shut at home with duct tape and couldn't get
out to the golf course.

I just hope that the Dept of Homeland Security calls in Red Green for
consultation and advice.  There is no man better suited to advise on the
uses of duct tape, in this time of emergency.

Oh, Yeah. I forgot about that. California.

Colin, I was going to post something to that effect several weeks ago.  I
tuned in late-night to a Golf Channel feed of one of the Australian events
and it was a US-style opening - not a single swing was shown for a full 15
minutes as they ***ed on about all the terrific things about the golf
course and all the terrific things that happened the day before.  Once the
egos get involved it's all about who can produce the finest show.  The golf
takes a backseat.

Lumpy.

Do what I do ... when the guide says the coverage starts at 12.00, start
watching at 12.15 just to avoid the puke-inducing intro.

BTW, the music in these historical pieces is always so predictable.
Every time you see footage from the '20s, you can guarantee the
background will be "The Charleston". Or from the '50s it's someone like
Bing Crosby or a Big Band. In fifty years time, what do you think
they'll play as background music when they show historical footage from
the 2000's ... Eminem? Kylie Minogue? ;-)

The problem with the Buick was that it was over by the time CBS came
on the air.

You mentioned the Harley Earl commercial.
One of those ads says, "It's the most decadent
automobile I've ever designed." or something
close. The word decadent is correct. I think
this is a terrible thing to do. It sounds like
Animal Farm.

Crowds? What crowds?

Last month I was out of town and got to see an Australian tournament (maybe
the open) on the golf channel.  I guessed the broadcast was free TV because
there were few or no commercials.  The coverage was awesome.  Shot after
shot with minimal commentary - and that while the shots were taking place,
not in cutaways to the booth.  And not just the top four players.  It was
the finest coverage I have ever seen, almost makes me want to get cable at
home.

I am guessing if the Buick on Sunday showed 100 putts and 100 shots (half
taped), then in the same period your broadcast showed 1,000.  I am not
kidding.  You are so lucky not to have CBS in Australia!

No, they save her for the Chrylser commercials.
