Tiger Woods' hypothetical 'rank' on the European Tour

To add insult to injury, Woods got 1st prize money in addition to his
appearance fee, whatever that is.  Anyone have a guess as to his place on the
Order of Merit if he were able to qualify for it?  It's got to be top 5.

I dont think he has played many european tour events this year so he wont be
ranked at the top. I think I read he as won 11 out of 22 events he has
played in Europe over his career though.

I think he's won three this year. The one in Thailand was the beginning of
this year, plus the Masters which counts also. So I would think he'd
probably be first on the money list, if you double counted for each tour.

Tiger Woods has > $US1.7 million in winnings derived from official euro tour
events. He has played in 4. The Order of Merit leader is Michael Campbell, who
has <$US 0.7 million. Gien that Woods will play in the 3 remaining majors and
probably 1 of the remaining World Golf events, he wl surpass alll euro regulars
in winnings but 2 or 3 million...but he won't have played in 11 events!!!  They
could make him an honorary member, but then none of the euro tour members would
have a shot at the OOM, despite playing in 15+ events to Woods' <10!

I don't know about the Order of Merit rankings, but I heard on the radio
this morning that he'd be currently third on the European Tour's money list,
if he was actually a member of the European Tour.

Woods has only (only ha, ha!) won 7 European Tour events, i.e. his two wins
in Thailand, the Asian Honda Classic, his two DeutschBank Opens and the Open
Championship.

However, in terms of events which count towards the European rankings his 4
other majors and his 3 WGC wins would also have to be counted.

As far as Woods hypothetical ranking in the European OoM I suspect he would
actually be first - the Deutschbank Open and the Masters would net him a lot
of Euros.  And his hypothetical ranking last year would have given him first
place too.

His European OoM tour ranking is hypothetical because he doesn't play in
enough European Tour events to merit a European Tour card.

I heard that he was third on the ALL TIME European money list.  I forget who he passed --
Ian Woosnam?

Chris,
what they meant was he would be 3rd in the ALLTIME Euro
Money list!
This season he would be comfortably 1st in the Order of
Merit and combined with the events he is due to play this
year, the majors and the world championships, PLUS
the Lancome Trophy is is playing in, he only has to play in
ONE OTHER event to qualify for the OOM.
Talk on Sky Sports suggests that he may enter the German
Masters the week after the Ryder Cup to
claim this honor. As we know, Tiger's into records and this
would surely be another...

-Johnny Walker Classic in Thailand(first 2001 tournament for Euro)
-Masters
-Deutsch Bank

If Tiger had standing on the European Tour, he would have led its Order of
Merit the past two years.  He needs to play 11 events this year to be
considered ... let's see ...

  Johnnie Walker
  Deutsche Bank
  Dubai
  Masters
  US Open
  British Open
  PGA
  NEC
  World Championship

Now ... isn't he playing in the Trophee Lancome?  That makes 10.  All he
needs is one more, if I'm counting right.

There will undoubtedly be complaints about the evils of co-sponsoring,
but Tiger wins over half the time he plays on the European Tour, so it's not
as if it would be some kind of travesty if he had an Order of Merit title
or two (or five) to his credit.

Not sure whether you are saying this tongue-in-cheek or not, but I don't
think you will find that the German gnomes were in the least upset at
paying Tiger's appearance fee, whatever it was.  The PGA Tour takes a
position against appearance fees, but the situation in Europe is
different.  The whole circumstances of professional golf, spectators,
sponsors, etc. in Europe and the rest of the "European" Tour are
different.  For their money they get more than four rounds of golf out
of Tiger.  I'm sure the accounting includes one or more clinics, dinners,
etc., which even without his showing up to play golf, attract spectators,
television viewers, etc., would be worth a large fraction of the ~$2m.
You won't hear more than the vaguest mutterings from the PGA Tour about
whatever fees Tiger collects, because they are still trying to figure
out whether the suddenly more-than-doubled revenues and purses in pro
golf are 100 percent Tiger's doing, or just 50 percent.

I think it's nuts that someone can get over a million bucks to show
up and play golf, but obviously the people with the money think
different!

Yep, a tongue in cheek, "You gotta be kidding me" kind of way.  And they put
a mini driving range on the balcony of his hotel room too.  Some guys...
errr... I'm green w/jealousy, but hey, I'd take the money too.  I'm no
baseball expert, but he seems to be a better investment than ARod (for now).

ESPN reported that Tiger would rank third on the order of merit on SC the other
night if he was qualified to do so.

Yes, but since we're being hypothetical, he could decide to play in enough
events to get the card, right?  How many events more would he need?
