U.S. Open 2003 - Day One

U.S. Open 2003 - Day One

Post by Larry Hodge » Fri, 04 Jul 2003 05:12:57

I've posted the draws for men's and women's singles & doubles at the U.S.
Open home page. Also up are the results for the first four events (out of
58!) that have been completed, as well as a few news items. Bad news - Jens
Lundqvist, the top seed in men's singles, has withdrawn, due to the theft of
his two custom-made rackets at the Brazil Open. Also, the #2 woman, An
Konishi, didn't show, and has been taken out of the draw. (The Japanese
women's team is here, and told us she isn't coming, but no reason has been
given.) This moves Wang Chen up to the #2 seed, behind Japan's Aya Umemura.

There will be articles in the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinal and Miami Herald
tomorrow and probably most days of the tournament. (There have already been
two in the Sun-Sentinal - links to the articles are on the U.S. Open home
page below.) NBC Channel 6 was here today, and they decided to feature the
multi-named Yip/Hugh/Dattel family (Lily Yip, Barry Dattel, Adam & Judy
Hugh), who were interviewed and filmed playing. I'll post when the segment
will show as soon as they let me know.

U.S. Open 2003 - Day One

Post by Larry Hodge » Fri, 04 Jul 2003 12:56:54

I just added more photos to the Day One report. (New ones are of Adam Hugh
getting interviewed on TV, Barbara Wei smacking a backhand, and Atha Fong
backhand looping.) Other photos are of Andrew Lin and Peter Li smacking
forehands, Jim McQueen dressed as Mr. American, and Under 2000 Hardbat
finalists Homer Brown and James Rautis.
