That's a tremendous feat, no question about it... a real feather in
Rafa career cap! The Spanish have been fortunate to have such a great
player so committed to the David Cup/International play over the
years... even with such talent depth as they collectively possess...

I never follow DC, but have the Spanish been so fortunate to play 80%
on clay or has Rafa been selective in his DC appearances?

He can help the team and country in the
most efficient way, given it's his best surface.
That's understandable.

Clay maybe the most difficult of the surfaces, so for
Nadal to have mastered clay is huge.

If clay is the most difficult of surfaces to master, then mastering
other surfaces should be a cinch for Rafa, no?  Wonder why that has
not happened?

Could be that, if there were sufficient time in tennis
good years, that he would.

In short, Nadal is a human being, not a machine.

Also, is there any other tier-1 great whose achievements are so one-
surface heavy?

You can ask same question in reverse: Why didn't Sampras master clay
despite mastering grass+hc.

Answer:

Clay is most difficult surface to master because you have to master the
whole game of tennis, not just serve.
