Seles vs Capriati circa 1991

After watching the Seles vs Capriati match from the '91 US Open
(thanks to Classic Sports TV) I was surprised how much Women's
tennis has changed. These two were just firing shots back and
forth at each other and chasing down just about everything.

This match was infinitly better than the last match I've
seen(Davenport/Testud). I was hoping I'd get to watch the
Navritilova/Seles afterwards. That would've made the day
perfect.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but compared to a few years ago,
the female tennis roster seems a lot weaker. I couldn't imagine
Martina Hingis even trying to keep up with the '91 Capriati.
Davenport going against the '91 Seles would just be embarrasing.
Hell, Seles '97 couldn't even hold a candle to Seles '91.

That is a little unfair.  That '91 match was replayed for a reason...  It
was one of the greatest matches (top 3, in my opinion).  No other two
players hit as those two did at that time.  Put Seles & Capriati back
together again, I'm sure they'll fire shots back and forth just the same.

Youre not serious, are you? Womens tennis is A LOT stronger now then
its ever been. That 91 match wouldnt even stand out today. Hingis is
WAY better than Capriati ever was. As for Navratilova, she was at least a
couple of years past her peak in 91 -- remember how the naturalized
American had fallen to Capriati on grass at Wimbledon just a few months
prior? Besides, Seles always had problems with players who could match
her pace.

As for this years Open, it is Hingis tournament to lose. That being
said, I dont see anyone else who should stop Monica in the final. Hingis
may have a snotty attitude but she can really play ball. IMO shell
probably take tennis to a level that its never seen before, much like
Graf, Sampras, Navratilova and McEnroe have done. I'll even predict
Hingis winning the Grand Slam befor the next Millennium.

I agree here, but I think that she may have to pace herself, just like
Graf, a bit and try to find that "happy medium" between match practice and
peaking at Grand Slam events.

Note- Some people would call this "tanking" just because a player wants to
be able to peak at the right moments.  This is total BS because any top
player will still win the smaller tournaments even if they are a level or
even two levels below their "peak."
