Federer did not recover from the injury yet

"My foot is still swollen before and after the matches and I am
fighting on the court to get through every match here in Shanghai," a
determined Federer told swissinfo.

I expect Federer to close out Gaudio in 2 sets. He has to play 2 days in
a row and will need to be as fresh as possible for the final -- assuming
that he is successful against Gaudio who is seeking advice from his
coach about coaching during the match tomorrow -- it was such a shame
that he was allowed to have conversations with his coach during the
match against Gonzo.

The 3 longish matches make sense after the extended layoff. The fact
that it is a RR made it easier to be relaxed in the matches, I suspect.
Even if he lost a match, it is not the end of the world.

The real tournament starts now.

Cheers,

vc

Assuming he beats Gaudio:  needing to play 2 days in a row on that
injury could mean an end to his amazing finals win streak.  It would be
especially sad if the streak ended because he had to retire...

Are you saying it's better for Fed to lose in semis rather than final,
just to keep 'streak' going?

Please say yes....

no, of course not.  Fed shouldn't worry about stats like that finals streak.

I have toyed with the idea that Lendl should have voluntarily lost that
Wimbledon SF 1987 to Edberg to make his opponent (Edberg) look more
"peakish" rather than still upcoming star...
