I would go to the French Open, cos the game is so unpredictable on
clay.

The French is grueling and even the men play long points. I think this is
the hardest one to win. Wimbledon, since it is played on grass is kind of an
oddball. Any one of the power players can win this one. The U.S. and the
Australian are tough because of the heat.

Lendl could not win on grass, but could play well on the hardcourt, and was
excellent on clay. Sampras plays well on grass and hardcourts, but may never
win the French. He seems to do better in the 3 set clay tournaments. I saw
him win in Atlanta, but he may not have the stamina to play 5 set matches on
clay and win the French.

This all makes Agassi's feat more impressive. The two mentioned above are 2
of the most *** players ever.

I'd also go to the French Open but I don't agree that the game is
unpredictable.   Clay rewards the hardest working, fittest guys who don't
mind grinding out a long point.  It's harder to hit winners on clay and
easier to stay in a point if you are tenacious.

Certainly the CONDITION of the clay makes the nature of the game
unpredictable. It can be very slow to fast depending on how much moisture
is in the dirt.   Perhaps that is what was meant.

I agree with you that the serve and volley is a thing of beauty to
watch, but it is also what is killing the viewing audience. There is
nothing to a tennis match where serve and volley makes up the whole
match.

Give me the US Open, where you see all around tennis and the points are
actually constructed and played out. That is what puts the e***ment
into a tennis match.

People do have tendency to forget that Lendl infact was not
so bad on grass at all. He was twice in the wimbledon final and
atleast 4 other times in the semis. Also he has one grasscourt-
title from queens (defeated Becker in the final).

He just were  that much better on other surfaces so his achie-
ments on grass do look little bland.

He had some incredible winning-streak on indoors before Becker
surpassed him as the best indoor-player. So he clearly could
play on fast surfaces. Too bad he started to consentrate on grass
  couple of years too late.

Anyway Lendl was the first modern-era tennis player whose
game would still be decent if not great in today's standards.

People are reminded of this fact so often that I wonder if some have
selective amnesia.

According to one stat I read a few years back- it is actually 3 grass court
titles- exactly the same amount of clay titles Sampras owns.  I believe
Lendl d. Stich in the Queens Club final you are talking about.

History is so harsh- he just couldn't WIN Wimbeledon.

Amen.  I think he defined the game we have today.

Well, I'd go to Australia....the sheer location and touristthing...and the fact
that I've always wanted to go to Australia probably are the reason. But, if I
had to choose for level of play and tournament I want to go to most...the US
Open no doubt.

That's easy...The U.S. Open 'cause of all the electrifying late-night five
set matches that end around 1:30 AM!

Wimbledon.  The atmosphere is civilized and there are a number of
people in London I want to go see.
