UK vs. US Davis Cup Tie SPOILER

Post by Shun Cheun » Mon, 05 Apr 1999 05:00:00

Talking about e***ment, the US won the first two singles and the UK
won the doubles and the first reversed single. So it comes down to the
5th match between the two #2 players, Rusedski vs. Courier. And that
match got into a 5th set when Courier finally won 8-6 in the 3rd. I have
watched some of the early sets and it is indeed very close. Courier has
never been that great on carpet, but he is playing some of the best
tennis that I have seen him play in the last 4, 5 years. IMO Courier is
playing almost as well as he was when he was #1 on a fast court.

Oh man, oh man, oh man! This is what Davis Cup is all about.

Forget Sampras. Forget Agassi. Jim Courier is da man. I have never, never, in
many, many years of watching tennis, seen a win pulled off with more pure guts.

Great Britain made a good run. I feel sorry for Rusedski. He had something
like 30 aces, but that wasn't enough. Courier was not to be denied. He had so
few unforced errors it was ridiculous.

Great, great job, Jim.

Yeah, what am I gonna do for fingernails now?

BTW was this the United Kingdom or the Great Britain team?  Not a huge
difference, but I'm curious.

Ditto the "This Is What Tennis Is All About". My hat goes off to all of the
participants!
Courier really rose to the occasion as he always does in Davis Cup.
Rusedski gave it his all and should be commended.

What e***ment!

...happy tennis :-)

Best wishes,
Gigi

Thanks Jim, I always new you had the heart and desire to win.  Winning for
your country allows all us compatriots to rejoice.  Forget those wins in the
Majors.  Davis cup, in my opinion, counts more.  You're the man!

It was the Great Britain team.
I am so gutted after that.  Great tennis, wrong result.

A slight digression here. I have forgotten what the difference between
Great Britain and United Kingdom is. I think some islands are included
in one case but not the other. Please remind me.

Thanks.

UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

GB is England, Wales and Scotland

The main difference, AFAIK, is that the UK includes Northern Ireland, as
well as the Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and various
other minor territories. Great Britain refers only to the big island,
which is composed of England, Wales and Scotland.
But some of you British people may wish to confirm (or disconfirm) this.

Man, that was one of the best matches I've ever seen. I was on the edge
of my chair yelling throughout sets 3, 4, and 5. If only I could play tennis
anything like those guys, it was incredible. And just think of the pressure,
to be able to play tennis of that quality under those conditions. Very
impressive.

Courier has such an iron mentality, his concentration is so unwavering.
Wish he would prevail in more big tournaments, I love to watch him play.
