More thoughts on the women's draw

I was remiss in not talking about the women in my previous posting.  I think
that we'll really get to see what Spirlea and Kruger (from South Africa)
are made of this tournament.  I hope that they both make it to the round
of 16, and that one goes on to play Steffi in the QF's.  Zvereva's
untimely exit is a shame, but it gives Kruger even more opportunity to make
an impact.  I'll be upset if Spirlea doesn't take Gabby out, too.

Fernandez's ousting makes Conchita's draw a bit lighter.  Pierce played
strong ball against Bradtke--I mean, she was hauling off.  I pray that
Mary watches the Rome final where Martinez took it to Sanchez Vicario,
because Mary has the arsenal to really break ASV's game.  I'm picking
Pierce over ASV in the semi's.  I did notice, though, that Bradtke did have
relative success when attacking Mary's backhand...I'm just hoping that Mary
won't give Arantxa that option.

just some thoughts...

South Africa's Joanette Kruger lost in the second round today to Catalina
Cristea, 6-3, 6-4.  Cristea toppled Natalia Zvereva in round one

Winners in straight sets were Graf over Begerow, Martinez over Oremans.
Two minor upsets recorded were Likovtesa over Carlson and Shi Tin Wang
over K. Maleeva in three sets.

Sabatini held on to defeat Amanda Coetzer 7-5, 6-3 and next meets up and
coming Irina Spirlea.  This should be a good match.
