Women's FO Draw--Quick THOUGHTS!!!

NICE DRAW!

Favorite First Rd Matches:
Nagyova v. Schett
Lucic v. Sanchez Vicario
Cara Black v. Martinez
Morariu v. Patty Schnyder

Most Dangerous Floaters:
Mauresmo (look out for 2nd round match w/ Hingis!)
Rubin (upset Novotna in 3rd round?)
Martinez (if she gets to second round, yet ANOTHER fight this year with Pierce)
Capriati (upset Coetzer in 3rd round?)
Pitkowski (upset Davenport in 3rd round? in front of her home country?)

Players Who Can Make Their BREAKTHROUGH at the French this Year:
++SCHETT.  Some would argue she's already been having a breakthrough
year.  If she can get past Nagyova, she should cruise to a Rd of 16 fight
w/ Rubin or Novotna.  Next would be a quarterfinal with Sanchez Vicario,
who Schett pretty much owns, or Serena Williams.  This could be good!
++PITKOWSKI.  Has titled this year and will be playing on home soil in
France.  Maybe I'm dreaming to think she could upset Davenport, but if she
does, LOOK OUT!  Next up would be Coetzer, who I think Sarah would beat
easily (sorry Amanda), then a match with from the Graf/Kournikova/Schnyder
part of the draw. The tricky part other than Davenport is whether Sarah
would get Coetzer or CAPRIATI in the Rd of 16.  If she runs into JEN-CAP,
well...

Returning Players I'm GIDDY to see in the Draw!:
++Brenda Schultz-McCarthy!!!  Wow!  Welcome back!
++Mary Joe Fernandez!!!  OK, she's been back for a bit, and she actually
has a *** draw...Serena Williams in the 3rd round, and ASV in the Rd of
16.

My PICKS to Title:
(in order of likelihood, in my humblest opinion)
Venus Williams
Martina Hingis
Mary Pierce
Steffi Graf
Monica Seles

By what standard? Highest chance of upsets? Most ridiculously seeded
of all time? :-)

Given the draw, I rather think you're right, except that I would
still give Hingis a slight edge over Williams.

It's truly interesting to try to guess which one of them is actually
"better" on clay. Hingis has the better record so far (13-1, to
9-1 for Williams). They both have two titles on clay, but Hingis
has two *bigger* titles (Hilton Head and Berlin, both Tier I;
Williams has Rome, a Tier I, and Hamburg, a Tier II).

The question is, would anyone be predicting this if Williams had
not beaten Hingis at Rome? That is, of course, the great balancer.

Oh well, we'll know about next Wednesday....
