Why Zvonareva and not Dementieva?

Because the Russians are too stupid to pick a doubles
player. Dementieva is playing doubles, and since they
didn't want her playing singles too, that left Zvonareva.

They should have had a team of Myskina, Dementieva,
Petrova, and Likhovtseva, with the first two playing
singles and the last two doubles. But no, they wanted
all singles players -- even though Likhovtseva and
Petrova have played doubles together and Dementieva
and Petrova haven't.

Speaking as a game theorist, I really hope Russia
loses. :-)

Because playing twice indoors against Mauresmo before in  this indoors
season Dementieva was destroyed both times. While Zvonareva was in winning
position against Mauresmo at Kremlin Cup, and Russian captain hoped that
allowed coaching would have helped neutralise Zvonareva's tantrums. It
didn't work, but it was worth a try. Anyways, Myskina saves the day for
Russians, and at this point it is hardly predictable whom Russians will play
tomorrow. Just like whether The French will play a substitute instead of
obviously tired Pierce.
