TRIVIA PART 12 -- Ins and Outs

TRIVIA PART 12 -- Ins and Outs

Post by Robert B. Walt » Sun, 10 Nov 2002 22:58:22

This part concerns itself with the five most
significant active singles players: Davenport,
Hingis, Seles, Serena Williams, Venus Williams.
"Ins" and "Outs" refers to the events they
have won. For example, Hingis never won
the Grand Slam Cup. So, for this non-WTA
event, Hingis is an "out." Or take the Olympics:
Venus and Davenport have won it. Hingis, Seles,
Serena have not. So the answer to the
question "Olympics -- In" would be "Davenport,
Venus"; the answer to "Olympics -- Out" would
be "Hingis, Seles, Serena."

All questions are 2 points, no matter how
many players fit the description, and there
is no partial credit.

A general hint: I will pick "interesting"
answers. E.g. I would not choose "Olympics --
Out" because there are three players who
fit the description and no link between them.

The tournaments are listed in calendar order.

Certain questions have BONUSES by them. These
events have some special significance PERTAINING
TO WHICH OF THESE FIVE PLAYERS HAS WON. You just
have to guess the significance, but if you can,
you will probably know you're right -- and
will get 5 points for it.

If you come up with another bonus answer I
like just as well, you'll get points for that,
too.

But it's singles, isn't it? Nobody seemed to like
doubles much. :-)

It's not all that easy to grade, either, but I had to
come up with something.

Note that, if I say "No" to a particular answer, the
players you list may or may not be wrong; the answer
may be WRONG or it may be INCOMPLETE or it may be
both. Remember, no partial credit.

SW, VW

Quote:

Seles

(A guess; the only one I'm sure of is that SW has won it)

Quote:

> Antwerp -- IN (BONUS)

Quote:

> Indian Wells -- OUT

VW.  For a long time, a "Serena" tournament

Quote:

> Miami -- OUT

I know for sure that Seles, VW, SW, and Hingis are all IN.

So if anyone's OUT it's Davenport.  And I think she must be.

Quote:

> Hilton Head/Charleston -- IN (BONUS)

Hingis.  Seles.  Davenport (her only US clay title, perhaps?)  VW.  I
don't think SW's played it much, let alone won it -- but this year it
was SW's last loss, wasn't it? before she won the FO, W, US...in fact,
has she lost since?

Quote:

> Hamburg -- IN

Hingis.  VW.

Quote:

> Rome -- OUT (BONUS)

VW, Hingis, and Seles have all won it.  So LD and SW are OUT.

No idea what the bonus is, but I do seem to remember that Hingis and
Seles both had their first big wins there -- Seles in 1990 over
Navratilova (first time Seles had beaten her) and Hingis very early --
1996, I think -- over Graf.

Quote:

> Wimbledon -- OUT

Seles

Quote:

> Stanford -- OUT

SW.

Quote:

> U. S. Open -- OUT (BONUS)

No one.  They've all won it.

Again, no idea what the bonus is, but occurs to me that at least one
has been in the final every year since 1995:  Seles (f, 1995,1996, lost
to Graf x2), Hingis (1997, d. VW), Davenport(1998, d. Hingis), SW
(1999, d. Hingis), VW (2000, d. Davenport), VW (2001, d. SW), SW (2002,
d. VW)

Quote:

> Bahia -- IN (BONUS)

Seles.  Only think I can think of is it was where she was when 9/11
happened.

Quote:
> Linz -- IN

VW

Quote:

> Moscow -- IN (BONUS)

Davenport.

Quote:
> Leipzig -- IN

VW.  Hingis.  Davenport.

(I'm guessing.  I wouldn't think Seles has ever played it, and SW
doesn't play much in European fall indoors.)

mauresmo, obviously, but hingis and kournikova would have also come OUT at
this year's australian open if hingis had won the singles title.

on second thought, the 2001 wimbledon web site had an article entitled
"martinez outs hingis" so maybe hingis has already been OUT-ed.

I again repeat: If I answer a question "No," it does not
automatically mean your answer is wrong. It is WRONG or
INCOMPLETE or includes excess answers or in some other
way does not match the exact list of right answers.

Yes.

Quote:

No.

(It's only existed for two years. :-)

Yes.

Quote:

Yes.

She lost at LA. (The first one. To Rubin.)

The above answer is not it.

Quote:
> > Hamburg -- IN

> Hingis.  VW.

Yes.

Quote:
> > Rome -- OUT (BONUS)

> VW, Hingis, and Seles have all won it.  So LD and SW are OUT.

No.

Interesting. But not related to winners and losers. And I
can't verify it, so I can't give points for it.

Quote:

Yes.

Quote:

Yes.

Interesting. Not as good as my bonus, but I'll give you
three points for it.

Quote:
> > Bahia -- IN (BONUS)

Yes. As for the bonus, again, the above is not related to
tournament winners.

No.

Quote:

No.

No.

Total: 8 correct, for 16 points. Plus 3 bonus points.

To emphasize: ALL bonus points relate to these
five and their pattern of winning at these
tournaments. Try pattern analysis.

it.

The real one is better. :-)

Quote:

Yes. But, again, the bonus is better.

I counted Oakland. But you're right either way.
So: Yes.

Quote:

Yes. But that's not the bonus, if you tried for it.

Good thing I put in the bonuses, so you still have
something to try for. :-) I'd be tempted to accuse
you of cheating -- except that you answered faster
than I was able to research this thing. :-)

That's 32 points plus 3 bonus.

On the bonuses: ALL bonus points relate to these
five and their pattern of winning at these
tournaments. Try pattern analysis.
