What a shame Kim and Justine aren't fit now that the sisters are back. I was
looking forward to some good encounters.

I know I was. It's amazing, really, this string of illnesses and injury. The
WTA officials and staff must be freaking out...

Yes and no. That is, they're pulling all sorts of PR tricks. But
they also keep insisting that the problem isn't real, that it
just *looks* as if there are more injuries.

Technically, they're sort of right -- e.g. we only had three
Roland Garros seeds pull out. If you do a year-by-year comparison
of 2003 to 2002, and of 2002 to 2001, and of 2001 to 2000, the
change is not statistically significant each year. HOWEVER,
the change from 1999 to 2003 *is* statistically significant.
And the WTA won't admit it -- and, really, *can't* admit it,
because it's their fault. If they concede that the ranking
system them promoted is to blame (which, of course, it is),
then they're open to lawsuit.

Of course, they could go back to a better ranking system
without admitting anything.

No, they're not. The players vote on ranking system changes.

You've been living in England too long. You think that would
stop a lawyer? Giving bad advice still leaves you liable.

Of course, not fixing the system might get them sued too.
But we know the WTA is brain-dead. If their choices are
to never admit mistakes and get sued, or admit mistakes
and get sued, they'll never admit mistakes. It's the
competent who are self-honest enough to admit they are
wrong.

I wonder how many people at NBC committed suicide over the FO.

Exactly. It would have been nice to see them all in top form. Now I am
beginning to think there will never be a time any more they are all in
top form at the same time AND the top 4 players in the world.

I have long thought that Venus won't get back to top. Now I am not
sure if Serena will either. And if Kim and Justine are out for long,
who knows what happens with them. And they can all have new injuries.
And there are new hungry players coming all the time. I have no idea
what the top 4 will be in June 2005.

if they all be available and in playing form, nobody will really care
much about the ranking.  i mean, aside from a few of the "real tennis
fans" on this newsgroup, i don't think that many people seriously
consider myskina to be the 3rd best player in the world.

If all these injuries continue, we could actually have 4 Russians on top.
Not very likely, but it _could_ happen...

I am not talking about rankings.

if all of the top players were playing to form at the same time i would
say that henin-hardenne is the third best player, based upon results
from past matches.

I'd say right now Myskina would be fave to beat Venus/Jen on clay.  Grass
remains to be seen...
