Not bad for SI, I must say.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/frank_deford/09/20/usa/

Excerpt:

Suppose, just suppose, that instead of having an American father and a
Thai mother, Tiger Woods had an American mother and a Thai father. Yes,
suppose Tiger Woods had grown up Thai.

Can you just imagine what mere cursory attention he'd be getting in the
U.S.? Why, most of the media would probably be falling all over
themselves wondering if Davis Love III and Chris DiMarco could finally
improve their games to catch up with that whatshisname Asian guy.

And suppose, just suppose, that Roger Federer had come from Maryland
instead of Switzerland. Why, our kid from Bethesda would already have a
new Cadillac model named after him ...

Thanks Vari, what an absolutely classic article.  I've already saved
it!

Indeed it is. Gee, do you think Federer might be more popular in America
were he AMERICAN???? Insight!

However, as a reason why Woods is more popular than Federer, this is
negligible. Anyone who puts in even the slighest thought knows that.

"Labels are so important, aren't they?"

not in this case.  I knew it was the usual condescending Deford drivel
without even reading the "Deford" in the link, let alone the article
itself.  SI + simplistic analysis = classic Deford (and not classic in a
good way, Rosemary).

But if Federer were to be an American, most probably, fame and
ultra-celebrity status would have hampered his tennis career as soon as
he won the 2003 Wimbledon. ;)

Nope.

They had Sampras as goat & he got no cadillac.

Invalid thread.

Oh c'mon.
Sampras in his prime had Agassi, who always attracted more crowd than Pete.

Who would they get to love now besides Roger? Andy?
